Ultimate guns

If you had to choose just a few guns to hunt anything with, defend with- any full on survival scenario (or at least able to hunt and defend with) what would you choose?

I ask this because those are the only things I look for in guns. If they arn't real good at putting meat on the table or I wouldn't want them in a shoot-out I don't really want it.

My personal choices:

Glock 9/40
Browning Hi-Power .40
1911 .45 (my personal preference is a springer milspec) all good for defense (I wouldn't use a handgun for hunting when I could have a rifle or shotgun because in my view a handgun is backup, last resort, or just enough gun to get you to a long gun- it's handy)

Browning over/under-hunting (I wouldn't use a shotgun for self defense- at least if I could only have one it would be for birds[food])

Ar-15 (designated marksman type [20'' barrel, acog, fixed stock, bipod, etc.]) with extra 7.62x39 upper (small game and people)
remington 700 .308 w/ good long range glass (bigger game and people)
Marlin 30-30 (game and maybe people & handy)
Marlin 981-t .22 (small game & handy)

Good runners up would be a garand, ak, fn-fal/ other .308 ''battle rifles'', ruger carbines and mini's, pump shotguns or semi's, sig, .357 revolvers, I'm sure there's more this gave me some real thought hahaha.

If I had to go totally minimalist, I could realistically do it all with the following:

S&W M&P40
Remington 870 (with a 21" RS barrel, and a 28"vr barrel)
Saiga .308

I'd probably go with a Marlin 39a because it is ever so useful,

2nd 870 12 ga.

3rd Blackhawk in .44 mag

4th: carbine of some sort in 44 mag. Maybe a lever.

I think I could hunt anything on the planet with that. If I had to worry about people too, I'd trade the carbine for a sniper rifle in 308 because of the extra range, but it's easier to get along with people than have a firefight with them.

When I hear phrases like “full on survival scenario” combined with defense, I think in terms of what I’m able to carry for an extended period that will handle large problems. Then I think of what I do the best job of shooting and availability of ammo. That leaves me carrying two guns that aren’t my favorites but are the most versatile. I’d go with my Steyr Scout and Beretta 92F. If I was lucky enough to have my girlfriend along I’d load her with my favorites, the Marlin 39A and Colt Woodsman.

12 gauge pump with a large capacity magazine. Mossberg or Remington, tons out there if you need parts. Take anything from quail to elephant.

being swift and saving resources would be key
in survival.

two kinds of ammo would already sukk.

a 9mm handgun + hunting-carbine should be enough
to defend AND get game. Not the perfect hunting kills ... sure
but PETA won´t be there .. and you´ll be hungry.

my savage 24 in 30-30/12ga, I have inserts to fire 22lr and 22mag, pretty much can put any north american game in the pot
and
one of my high capacity pistols for 2 legged critters that wont be persuaded by a shot from the rifle and shotgun barrel of the above.

Hmmm - this really made me think, and I've changed my mind a dozen times!

Two others that I would strongly consider:
AR-15 with a 20" barrel that could almost replace the .308 and .45
.22 long rifle.

If I could only have one rifle, one pistol and one shotgun:

Armalite AR-10A2 Carbine + AR-10(T) upper

S&W 1006

Remington 11-87 Police + 26" choke threaded barrel

Those 3 guns could be forced to cover any possible firearm requirements.

If I could add a .22, it'd be my Marlin 39

I would save my room in my bug out bag for water, water containers, clothes, medicare, and other supplies. Light, small, and able to run.
Squirrels, Dogs, Chickens, Hogs, you could take it all.

That's why my first choice would be a 22 rifle. Ammo easy to carry. If I needed only one gun to survive, It would absolutely be a 22 rifle.

The real answer to how to survive on the move, cross country, among possibly hostile people, is to find and befriend a man carrying a gun like this:

theoretically with access to the right ammo...you could do just about anything with a 12 gauge shot gun...like my 870

the same could go for a good solid .357mag, like a GP100 or a 686

Zip7 i love that movie and i agree about the 22 rifle. It may not be the best for a shoot out but then if I were ever on my own and in a shoot out i think i would shoot and retreat, shoot and retreat. my main concern would be to make sure that my family was safe. ie: try to avoid any and all shoot outs.

Assuming unlimited ammo, or that I could locate ammo as needed:

FN Five-seveN. High capacity, and somewhat unique as a handgun in its ability to engage targets at longer ranges.

Taurus Raging Bull 6.5" in .454 Casull. Large enough to hunt game and fend off predators of the two-legged and four-legged variety.

Remington 870 Police Magnum 12 gauge shotgun.

Winchester Model 70. Not sure if I'd choose my .243 or my .30-06. Probably the .30-06, and use the shotgun for smaller game.

If I had to really choose and I had to accept the limitations of common ammo and such, I'd probably keep everything on the list except the Five-seveN and go with my FNP-9 in its place.

This is interesting because my father in law and I were just discussing this the other day....what guns would we take to the ranch and what ammo surplus would we have stored in the event of a national or global disaster. My choice were:

Remington 870/1100 (versatile from slugs to birdshot)
AR-15
and my Glock 21.

My father in law disagreed with the AR-15 saying it looks too tactical and if people came on to the property, they may be scared off or become defensive....I said, "I hope so because that's exactly the people I don't want on the property". Least then they'll know we have firepower

I really like my Mossberg 590 in the bullpup frame, but my Browning Superposed is a better hunting scatter gun.
I like my AR (put a CMMG 20" 1:7 twist chromed barrel on it) but a .308 makes for a better hunting rifle and my CETME is quite accurate at 300+ yards with the original sights.

I've got a large variety of stuff from .22 to 300 WBY mag. My home defense is my side arm first and my Benelli Super Nova as a secondary.

Seriously, a wheelgun and levergun chambered for the same magnum load. And a 12 gauge, even a single-shot. If I had to think bare minimum, ease of maintenance, and likelyhood of ammo shortage, those would be them. I don't even care about the brand.
