went to the range the other day with my new loads for 45 auto. was using imr 4756 with ranier 230 gr fmjs. cant remember my powder load (its written down in my log at home). they were bunny fart loads

when i got done i noticed i had quite a bit of the unburned powder on my arms.

how bad of thing is this and should i switch powders? it was a pretty accurate load for me

4756 is a bit slow for anything but factory equivalent loads or warmer. Try some W-231 for all around loads or if you want to stay with bunny fart loads try some WST. ;)

What they said+try a shorter COL, more powder, or faster powder.

Maybe a 230gr hallow point will help.

As said above, low pressure is causing your unburnt powder problem. Usually using a faster powder like W231 will help. I use W231 almost exclusively for my .45 Auto ammo. It has a nice wide load range where it burns clean and completely although every powder will burn more completely and cleaner higher in the pressure range.

My favorite load is 5.5gr w231 under a 230gr bullet. It's clean and accurate in my pistols.

SR-4756 is an excellent powder, but it needs to be loaded near the maximum data to be efficient. The advice to use a faster powder is good advice. It seems that Bullseye and Winchester 231 were practically made for the .45 acp.

Hope this helps.

I use SR 4756 in 9 ,40,and 45.In the higher presure rounds it cleans up ok but for 45 it need to be pushed, then it is a great powder.Try AA#5 or #7, or N340. AA#5 and N340 are close to the same burn rate but are very clean ,even at bunny fart to cat fart pressures.

I get that with my 158 grain lead 357 loads and AA9. I have made a habit of laying paper down on the range bench to monitor:)
