is it possible to find a full auto for under 5000.00 i would love to own one but i can't afford 20.000.00 for one so is it possible to find something reliable for say 5000.00 i have heard that mac 11 are in that range but i also heard they jam a lot do they ? i don't really know would any of you buy one ?

There are several choices that you could probably find under or right around the $5,000 mark. The MAC series are the most commonly mentioned.

They were made by several firms over the years, some better and some worse, and as a stand-alone product, they aren't really fantastic firearms.

However, if you look into what Lage is doing with them, (http://max-11.com/) they can be very easily (and fairly cheaply, considering) made into quite versatile and more useful weapons.

If you can stretch that to $5,000-8,000 you can also look at Stens, Sterlings, Stemples, the Ruger AAC556, and maybe the FNC, among others.

Under 5 large - a SWD M11/9 and either a MAX11 or a AMP11 upper receiver. Or a Reising, I have also seen a cool little Stemple that was wearing FAL furniture for $3800, it comes with 16 mags and keeps asking me to take it home :-D

Plenty of options under 5G. For the most part, MAC's (Jersey or Texas excluded) are very reliable. The real complaint with them is the uncontrollable rate of fire which is cured with either of the uppers I mentioned and u'd still be under yer mark. Im going the MAX11 route, myself.

Check out WWW.subguns.com NFA classifieds. Lot of sweet check eaters over there :)

Mine doesn't... M11/9. With good mags (mine likes Recon Ordnance mags) it's been pretty much flawless.

Works well with the Lage M11/22 conversion also.

A MAC 10 or M11/9 with the Lage Max-11 upper is a formidable, versatile subgun that can run with the best of them.

My $.02

I once owned a MAC 11 (along with a factory suppressor), and, frankly, I didn't think much of it.

The only way that paying astronomical prices for such mediocre machine guns makes sense is if you believe in the "greater fool theory," that is, that someone else will come along to pay more than you. In this economy, that's a questionable proposition. Furthermore, I believe that we'll see the Hughes amendment repealed, and the registry opened up, sometime within the next 10 years. If that happens, the bottom will drop out of at least the low end of the MG market.

In terms of both shooting fun and, if it comes to that, combat effectiveness, you would get "more bang for the buck" by buying several semiauto EBR clones, and lots of ammunition, in preference to a single low-end MG.

Oh my goodness, yes -- of course! I think most shooters understand these days that even the best sub guns are collections of poor compromises, outclassed in almost every way by multiple other weapons available far cheaper and with far less hassle.

(And generally, when we discuss MACs, Stens, Stemple/SwedishK/S&W76, Sterlings, Uzis etc, we're NOT discussing the very best examples of the form. In a style of arm known for being inferior to other types, these are designs with shortcomings which keep them from being all they could be.)

But due to the legal hurdles and enforced scarcity and cost of these cheap rattletraps, they do have a certain "cachet" -- they represent an itch that buying a much more useful semi-auto carbine just can't scratch.

Since the original question was about FA and not SA EBRs, I would agree with Sam. My M-11/9 is about the only FA gun I can afford these days (given that 9mm is relatively cheaper to shoot AND you can get a .22 conversion) and runs well enough. I have a MAX-11 upper on it to slow it down and add reliability. I bought it a while back, so even with the Lage unit, I have less than $2K in it. Would I rather have a HK or M16? Sure. And my wife would probably rather be married to Brad Pitt...but life isn't always what you want it to be.

Heck, I think the MACs are a perfect weapon for the occasional ambush inside a telephone booth (oh yeah, they don't make those any more).

Seriously, with the extended upper, picatinny rail mounted red dot, upgraded stock and a trained trigger finger a MAC 10 can be devastating at close range. Same, same..put a man with a light carbine trained to use cover and make shots count prolly the guy with the most brains and guts wins.

Alex,

No argument on your point. I have done far more damage over the years using my issue M16 in semi-auto mode than automatic. But the question posted by the OP wasn't which is the better approach. He just wanted to know what options for automatic weapons were available under $5K. Not many, I am afraid. My old M-11/9 dressed out with the Max-11 convesion, my Eotec, an upgraded stock (modified M249) and AAC Striker2 can still comes in under $5000. With the .22 conversion I have ordered, it will even be cheap to shoot. But for serious social work I will do more damage at longer range with my M24 bolt gun...or my Barrett. Different issue altogether.

I owned the Mac-10, in .45ACP and the Mac-11, in .380. I sold both, too fast a rate of fire and expensive to feed $$$$$$. Besides you want to be able to hit what you shoot at, not mearly spray the <deleted> out of the general area. Get a Stemple or SW76(or repo) and be happy. Spend a little more and get the very best the Sterling. The Sterling is very controllable, easy to maintain, and mine has never jammed after many thousands of rounds.

Ever in Vegas , stop in at our monthly subgun matches , we have a few shooters that shoot M11's , and believe me they do extremely well and can hit exactly what they aim at.
