Just a quick note to express my pleasure with the Undertaker Bowie from Condor Tool & Knife I received this morning. It's a beautiful instrument with great lines and balance.

It came wrapped very carefully -- as if it had been prepared for shipment by a rare book dealer. Lightly oiled, carefully wrapped in tissue and then plastic, and then finally boxed.

Under direct sunlight I couldn't find a single flaw. The grind looks perfect. The walnut handle has beautiful tight grain. The gorgeous leather sheath is overly tight, but that'll work itself out. This is one of those knives that was frequently suggested to me by Amazon. For the price -- under 90 bucks, I always meant to grab one, as I had long desired a big knife with a "coffin" grip.

They've been out of stock at most online sellers, although the scalpers do have them for $120+ When Amazon had some stock several days ago at the old price, I finally dropped the hammer, and I'm now glad I did.

I love the fact that it's manufactured in El Salvador. It did a real nice job on tonight's BBQed Tri-Tip, that's for sure!

I noticed that recently. Glad you're happy with your purchase.

Where's the center of balance?

I'm not a Bowie person but there's something about the blade and handle that draws you to that knife.
Yeah, I know what you mean. At first it caught my eye -- I've seen a couple of cowboy action shooters wearing them at matches. I wasn't sure if it was something good or bad? Then I realized that the sort of old-time grip I was interested in is known as a "coffin-style" grip. This knife was named after its grip type -- the "Undertaker."

It's this scene from The Rough Riders (begin 14:53) which first made me aware of coffin grips and begin to covet them:

I think that company also makes machetes, so I guess they've got some experience with large blades.

Since they entered into the US knife market they've made a huge range of knives and since Joe Flowers started designing and consulting for them they've taken off. BTW, if you don't know Joe he's well worth learning about. Nice guy, crazy adventurer, Godzilla fanboy, dad to good children.

I just looked at Condor's online catalog and I'm just blown away. Much larger than CS's catalogs. They seem to be out-CSing CS, in terms of basing many of their designs on historic blades. They actually manufacture what they sell too. If this knife ends up performing well, I'm going to be buying more of their product. https://www.condortk.com/catalog
