This issue must not have the urgency that keeping Terri Schiavo in the headlines does - or Congress and our President would act on it.

Report says demand for outside workers still strong in U.S.

The Associated Press
Updated: 11:14 a.m. ET March 21, 2005WASHINGTON - The nation’s undocumented immigrant population surged to 10.3 million last year, spurred largely since 2000 by the arrivals of unauthorized Mexicans in the United States, according to a report released Monday.

The population of undocumented residents in the United States increased by about 23 percent from 8.4 million in the four-year period ending last March, according to the analysis of government data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a private research group.

That equates to a net increase of roughly 485,000 per year between 2000 and 2004. The estimate was derived by subtracting the number of unauthorized immigrants who leave the United States, die or acquire legal status from the number of new undocumented immigrants that arrive each year.

The prospect of better job opportunities in the United States than in their native countries remains a powerful lure for many immigrants, said Pew center director Roberto Suro, pointing to a reason often cited by other researchers.

“The border has been the focus of federal efforts (to cut illegal entry) and has not produced a reduction in flow. Certainly that’s an indication of ongoing demand,†he said.

The population is growing at a similar pace as in the late 1990s even though the U.S. economy today isn’t as robust, Suro said.

Assuming the flow of undocumented immigrants into the country hasn’t abated since March 2004, the population is likely near 11 million now.

The report considered “undocumented†immigrants primarily as those here illegally; those in the United States on expired visas; or those who violated the terms of their admission in other ways.

Also included are a small percentage of immigrants who may have legal authorization to be in the United States, including those with temporary protected status and those applying to seek asylum.

57 percent from Mexico
Mexicans by far remain the largest group of undocumented migrants at 5.9 million, or about 57 percent of the March 2004 estimate. Some 2.5 million others, or 24 percent, are from other Latin American countries.

Overall, the U.S. foreign-born population, regardless of legal status, was 35.7 million last year. Those of Mexican descent again comprised the largest group — more than 11 million, or 32 percent.

Controlling the flow of immigrants over the porous U.S.-Mexico border will be a central topic of discussion when Mexican President Vicente Fox meets with President Bush in Texas on Wednesday.

The number of U.S. residents with Mexican backgrounds has increased by nearly 600,000 annually since 2000, with more than 80 percent of the new arrivals here with proper documentation, the Pew center estimated.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other government officials have raised concerns about border security amid recent intelligence that al-Qaida terrorists have considered using the Southwest border to infiltrate the United States.

Encourage guest-workers?
Bush, meanwhile, has also promoted a guest-worker program that would allow migrants to work in the United States for a limited time as long as they have a job lined up.

Critics of the plan argue that such workers drive down wages because they often work for lower pay and fewer benefits that native-born residents.

“The best way to approach this is attrition by enforcement — better enforcement of the borders and of worksites,†said Steve Camorata of the private Center for Immigration Studies.

The Pew report found undocumented immigrants increasingly fanning out beyond longtime destination for foreign-born residents. In 1990, 88 percent of the undocumented population lived in six states — California, New York, Texas, Illinois, Florida and New Jersey.

By 2004, those states accounted for 61 percent of the nation’s undocumented population. The top state is California, where nearly one-quarter of the undocumented reside, followed by Texas (14 percent) and Florida (9 percent).

Next on the list were New York (7 percent), Arizona (5 percent), Illinois (4 percent), New Jersey (4 percent), and North Carolina (3 percent).

Arizona and North Carolina are two of the fastest-growing states in the nation overall and have metropolitan areas booming with new construction, restaurants and service-oriented businesses — job sectors that often hire undocumented workers.

A propos nothing, as a lifelong Californian it annoys me to no end to see terms like "undocumented immigrant".

The number in this category is negligable, but included in an attempt to make the use us the term "undocumented" instead of "illegal" justified.

When 9-11,
The 2nd happens and the investigation traces the murders back to coming in over the southern border.

The Democrats. will keep their mouths shut.

President Bush will take the Republican majorities in both houses of Congress down the toilet with him, just like Clinton did in 94 over AWB

When it happens remember you heard here on the THR 1st.

If there is such a demand for illegal immigrants, why not charge the businesses for their deportation when discovered?

The illegal alien population in this country is closer to 20 million than 11.

Bush is going to hand the presidency to the Democrats when a third party candidate takes a righteously pissed off 10% of the republican base away from the republican nominee.

I also think Bush is doing nothing because there would be an immediate impact on the price of some things that would be visible to the electorate. He will ignore the cost of the illegals to our infrastructure.

They're illegal aliens. Each is a felon.

I'm sorry to say I think you're right.

It serves as evidence of the further pussification of our land. Once you can no loger call things what they are, you're in trouble.

as long as theres greed in the business world, they will be doing it.

Its simple,If an undocumented alien goes to place A and they pay him 8 bucks an hour but place B is willing to pay him under the table without regards to health and safty regulations as well as paying for their insurance and taxes...he could get 15 bucks an hour and the company will still be better off- financially

The local police in the area on a news show last evening "has " no problem with it as he isnt working for immagration, its not his job and as long as they obey laws..its ok.

cha-ching$$$$

Things are going to get very ugly in this country over this issue in the next couple of years. I wouldn't be surprised to see some POed good ol'boys start turning lonely sections of the southern border into their own personal live-target rifle range.

This is one issue where Mom and Pop America are squarely against the positions of the big parties, the big businesses, the media elite, etc. If there is one issue that makes Joe Sixpack wake up and realize he has to hold politicians accountable, this will be it.

The study is waaay low on its estimate. Advocacy groups love to underestimate a problem. Tends to discredit those who would stop the problem.

Someone did a study by taking a look at the underground economy and concluded the actual figure is actually approaching 30 million. So, yea, 20 million is more accurate.

Ditto on strong dislike for the term "undocumented immigrants" when we're discussing illegal aliens. In my book, the only acceptable alternative to "illegal aliens" is "foreign criminals."

Amen to this - the Bushmen are seemingly oblivious to the depth of feeling in the GOP core constituency (and a good part of the Democrat core as well!) on this issue. You just have to wonder what Vincente Fox has on GWB, since nothing that's been disclosed in public explains the Bush refusal to do anything. (Even talk show hosts from Limbaugh to Hannity have commented on this.)

I agree with most of the previous opinions that these people have commited a crime to get here and should be sent back. Having the proper legal documentation to be here is one thing, but living here illegally is unacceptable, and should be refered to as such. Illegal not undocumented

If only you have called this one, it would be worth the cost to date to get the public or even the middle class to focus on an issue that unites enough voters to make the policritters fear for their place at the public udder.

...and don't EVEN think about making an "undocumented Class 3 firearms purchase!"

"Undocumented guest worker" my hind end.
ILLEGAL ALIEN, ILLEGAL ALIEN, ILLEGAL ALIEN, ILLEGAL ALIEN, ILLEGAL ALIEN, ILLEGAL ALIEN!

Maybe if we say it enough times "they" will start to understand that we're not buying into their overly-sanitized political correctness. :cuss:

why dont we call them what they really are, invaders. calling them even illegal aliens makes light of whats most of them are really doing, trying to turn certain parts of the south west into little mexicos, we know all about la raza and groups like it, wanting to turn parts of america over to mexico by simply coming over illegally and pushing everyone else out of the area.

they are invaders. shoot them on site. yes this sounds mean and it is. its suppose to be. treating this situation with kid gloves hasnt worked, lets try a harder approach.

and certain corporations are eating it up. hey..the ceo still gets his 300k bonus, the books still look good and ethics take a back seat....its all politics.

Its one area I wish got more attention.
