Trying to attach a nice old Unertl to a 1965 Rem. 700.

The scope is the external adjustment type, 3/8" dovetail grooves with thumbscrews. This is not one of those looong target scopes where the objective has to mounted to the barrel, and the action is pretty long on this rifle (7 mag) so I want to mount the scope to both ends of the receiver only.

I found these target bases at Brownell's:

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.aspx?p=12730&st=841105175&s=30798

The "contoured bottom radius" on these bases might fit the front of my receiver, but it's sure not going to fit the (flat) back of the receiver, and the front and back are at different heights (0.15"?). Also, these bases "do not fit Redfield external adjustment scopes." Would they fit Unertl ext adj scopes?

Should I get a pair and have them machined to fit, or look somewhere else?

Thanks

If they won't fit Redfield, I doubt if they will work.

Redfield, Unertl & Lyman target scopes used the same barrel & receiver mounted bases as I remember. We used them interchangably on Model 70 match & sniper rifles in the service anyway.

I'd contact this guy for help with getting or finding the proper mount bases that will fit the Rem 700 & Unertl adjustable ring clamps.

Yeah, I did find his website earlier in my searching - I sent him an email, but didn't hear back... Maybe I'll give him a call.

Thanks

Steve Earle makes dovetail scope bases, and will probably help you out.

No www, though.

Spoke with Mr. Earle, he's sending my bases tomorrow. Thanks for putting me in touch with him, he certainly seems knowledgeable and professional.
