Loaded up some rounds for my ruger sr1911 the other day, and decided to take them out shooting today. Weather was cold but it was at least sunny. Mainly went out to sight in my buddies rem 700 and put some rounds through my ar15's. Was shooting at an 8" circle steel target at 100 yards with the rifles and decided to try the 1911. Ill be damned if i didn't hit 2/3 of the shots after I figure out where to hold... Never expected to be ringing a 8" gong at 100yards with a pistol. Guess I found my new thing to practice. Anyone else shoot long distances like that with pistol? I normally practice at 7, 10 and 20 yards. Had my go pro with me today and forgot to turn it on... :banghead: Next time!

Just thought I'd share.

With a 4" GP100 w/ factory iron sights and the right load I can put 70-80% of my shots on a Shoot'n'C target at 100 yards. But that's from a bench resting my wrist on a bag. A buddy and I were shooting one day, mainly sighting in some rifles when he said something about trying the revolver. I pulled it out just for grins and was thoroughly surprised when he started calling out hits. While looking through the spotting scope. I knew what the holdover was at 50 yards, just doubled it and whadaya know.

I know a lot of folks here seem to "Have no problem hitting a 2" target 99% of the time at 1/2 mile"....:) Having kidded about that, I do know some people who can consistently shoot that well.

Me, I find it pretty impressive to be able to hit an 8" target at 100 yards consistently. I can pretty consistently hit a torso sized silhouette at 100 yards but that is about my limit.

I'll shoot at stuff left on the bank at 100 yds with my 9mm and 44 Mag. The 44 is no big deal, shoots just a hair low. I can usually get pretty close with my 9mm walking a couple of shots to whatever the target is. Really have to lob the 9mm out that far too. It's pretty fun.

I've never really considered myself all that great with a handgun, but I've done some pretty amazing things with both the 44 mag, and 357 mag.. The first was with a snub nosed K frame .357 mag. shooting full tilt 296 jacketed loads. My Son and I were just sort of messing around, and he said I'll bet you can't hit the 200 yd. steel plate. So I gave it a guess and let the first round fly, hit low about 3 or 4 feet. So I held high about 3-4 feet and clang! then I did it 4 more times in a row. That's not it, these guys that were shooting next to us saw what I did and said try to hit that soda pop can, which was sitting at the 100 yd. line. I hit it on the first shot, and like 3 more times with the remaining 5 rounds in the cylinder after that.

The 44 mag. wasn't as impressive, being it was a 7-3/8" barrel SBH. But I nailed a coyote at around 150 yds. once, and also nailed a jack rabbit at a good 100 yds..

Fun stuff, and it's really cool when you have that lucky one day now and then.

The best example of luck I've ever seen.... And I'm not saying any of the achievements here are luck, but maybe. lol

My son and I were shooting 22's one day on BLM, across a lake cove. These tiny black birds were out 80 yards dipping and diving after insects -- super fast. (not bats)

I'll be damned if he didn't get the luckiest shot of his life and downed one of those birds with a 10/22 with a scope, while bird was flying 80 yards from him dipping and diving way high in the sky. It crashed into the lake like a Japanese Zero.

32, I'm not surprised at all that you were able to do that, in fact I'd be surprised if you weren't able to do it. I've been a handgun lover all my life and most people would be surprised at what can be accomplished by a handgun at long ranges. I used to hunt jackrabbits in Montana with either a .22 Colt Single Action in a 4 & 3/4 barrel or my Colt Buntline which had a 9 inch barrel. With experience, hitting a Jack at 75 yards wasn't a problem. If the range was longer, then you "walked" the bullet into the Jack.

Elmer Keith was perhaps the most experienced handgunner and writer of his time. He shot game with a handgun at phenomenal distances, some of which I shake my head such as 600 yard kills on Mule Deer. But the point in that handguns will reach out much further than most people will believe.

Years ago, growing up in a ranching family, my cousin and I carried our sidearms or had them with us. He had a 4" model 19 and I had a 4" model 66. Sometimes the dirtiest job was wagered on a shooting challenge. We often shot tin cans or broken disc sections out to 150 yards or more. I haven't tried it in years but with regular practice it's possible. I once rolled a raccoon crossing corn stubble field at 180 yards with a .38 wadcutter.

Yeah, one of the clubs I belong to has some heavy steel targets hanging from chains at the 100 yd. range. I can ring one on purpose with an iron-sighted pistol....some of the time. The gun will do its part, when I'm capable of doing mine.
Plinking is one thing, but for any real purpose? Well, if you've got optics on the pistol and you're into hunting or siluetas that way, I guess the answer is yes. In most situations, scoring a hit at 100 yards with a pistol just gives extra time to bring a rifle into play....
