Mr. Ross from Catherine - Real Name

PS:

Dear Mr. Ross,

I liked your book exactly as you wrote it. Thank you!

I borrowed a copy from a political buddy of mine many, many years ago. Later on I bought my own copy.

I wrote a review about your book on Amazon a zillion years ago. I spread the word about your book on many gun and political websites over the years (Recently on Rimfire Central since I joined up there a few months ago.) and while speaking up at Pro Gun events. Gun shows, political rallies, my former indoor and outdoor gun ranges, back east, and out here in Western Montana too.

I wait with baited breath for you next book to be in the book stores.

I usually have a list of favorite authors especially when it comes to firearms. You and L. Neil Smith (His essays.) along with many other fiction and non fiction authors TOP my list.

Mr. Lee J. told me that you were a fine man too. THE famous gun man, you know him from Knob Creek and from his fine work in the firearm and ammunition industries. Lee J. and Terry M. were two gentlemen along with my late husband who influenced me to a certain degree AFTER I started to buy MY OWN firearms and get more into the shooting sports. (SELF defense first!) My groom/husband of two years loved your book too.

Thank you for your contribution to the shooting sports industry, gun culture and for the outstanding book, Unintended Consequences.

God bless you and yours.

Sincerely,

Catherine

Catherine, if you like L. Neil's essays, make sure you pick up a copy of 'Lever Action', which collects many (most?) of his speeches and essays on various subjects - lots of gun stuff. Also give VERY strong consideration to 'The Probability Broach', his first published novel, and IMO his best (I've read about half of them so far; most of them tie in to the PB universe, but many are in the far future). The sequel to PB, 'The American Zone', is good, but not as good as PB.

Give 'em a try. I suspect you won't be disappointed.

Dear Erictank,

Thanks. I usually read his essays online and the Lever Action essay book sounds very good.

I have heard about the other one but I have not read it... TPB. I am not into science fiction that much but I did HEAR that it was very good.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Catherine
PS: I did not know if this board had a "quote section" or not so I am just answering you this way. I did not paste/post back to you.

I understand most of the sex scenes/rape scenes had a point. Especially Henry's and Cindy's. The only problem I saw with Caswell and his relationship is that it was NSA sex with an otherwise lesbian. It was written poorly (their relationship). And, other than the fact that we know Henry Bowman (and by extension, Mr. Ross, dig threesomes) and Cindy Caswell need a third to have fun, they go on a killing spree, and the only thing connecting them is a mutual love of kinky sex.

To a smart man, that isn't a good enough reason to take her along. I'm not saying they wouldn't. I'm not even saying that such things haven't happened before (they have more than you'd think). I'm just saying Ross doesn't tell us.

There would have to be something deeper going on for such a deeply intelligent man as Bowman is to bring Caswell along. Ross doesn't show me why a smart guy brings his personal sex toy along. He could've, he just didn't.

Thing is Cindy was a smart gal. She was NOT Harry's "sex toy" She (like Harry) had killed before. SHE is the one who aproched Harry about killing vampires.
I don't recall any remarks about Harry and Cindy having sex (with each other) Yes both with Tammy (whatever her name was)
They only brought "sex toy" along for legal stuff. I don't recall every when they were "working" Plus Cindy was a asset.
Recall she and Harry had long term relationship, she was not a typical stripper (on drugs, in trouble with law, willing to sacrafice others for personal gain, etc)
I do agree a lot of sex stuff did add to story. It could be toned down in areas is all.

John Ross was a trailblazer with UC. I read it every few years. (That is, when I get it back from the folks I lend it to.)

I just wish we would get a chance to read Detour!

I think the book's greatest value is as an historical novel, which, in combination with the "what if" scenario, can really get one thinking.

Campers, it's mild. Face it. If you're freaked out by it, odds are your television only gets three channels, and only if you're holding the rabbit ears just so...

JR, hope things are going okay - haven't heard any updates. You've got folks hopin'...

I read the book in a week. Its about 1,000 pages and kept me interested..

Only two factual errors.. JOHN , did you fix them ?

The first printing had several minor factual errors--mostly brain farts/typos on my part. Which two are still there? The amount of C4 at the MOVE killing? AND?

JR

I honestly don't see what the fuss is about. I've got, what? A half dozen fairly short scenes in a book that's over EIGHT HUNDRED pages long?

This subject has been debated to death, and I am sure you are well sick of talking about it. Personally, I will buy a copy of your next book the first day it is available, and I do believe that UC is far and away the most important piece of American fiction I have ever read.

With that said, I do think it is obvious that at least PART of your motive in writing UC was to make an impact in our country, educate some good people, and further the RKBA cause and liberty in general. In your introduction you said
It is my hope that this book will reduce the likelihood of armed
conflict in this country.

It certainly has made a larger impact than you probably even imagined, though we are probably still on the same track we were before to some extent. UC woke a lot of people up, and helped educate some of us younger guys on some things which we had never been taught before.

I personally have lent a copy to certain people who I felt could ignore the parts they found distasteful, and really be helped by the content inside. (Chew the fish and spit out the bones). There have been a couple of instances where people I know were DRAMATICALLY affected by the book, and their whole lifestyle was changed. I wont go into the details here but they are individual victories for liberty and are now deeply interested in the RKBA where there was no interest before.

I have also lent the book to some people who returned it to me angrily because I had misjudged their willingness to look over certain things, and there are people who I knew better than to let them see it.

None of this makes any difference if you are writing a book for your personal satisfaction, or strictly for entertainment purposes. My hope though, is that while you are writing the sequel, you will take into account the fact that it's audience and it's effectiveness WILL be limited by some of the sexual content. It is of course your choice in how you want to write the book, but I hope you will find a way to write the next story so as to maximize the scope of people who will be willing to give it a chance to affect them. All while weaving a great story with fully developed characters :) We dont ask for much!

P.S. A note on the violence. To put it in the same category as the sexual content is absurd. Good men must stand ready to do violent deeds if needed, and while a love for extreme violence is unhealthy, the willingness to acknowledge it's existence in the world be ready prepared to violently defend yourself is important.

I just got it, I love the book. Can't put it down. I normally do not read much more the a magaine article.

I love the way it is put together in short segments.

The storys mixing in with the history is great. I find my self reading a little & then doing some research to learn more.

The stuff in the begining about the Miller case floors me.

I still can't believe that decision.

The part about the ribbon in US currency being metallic and remotely detectable?

2 factual erros

John;

One of the errors was a comment in the book, that a battleship, firing a broadside, with all guns would be moved sideways.... It doesn't. I can confirm this doesn't happen seven ways from Sunday.

The second one you told me when we were on the phone a couple of years ago, you got from a cop who was at an incident, which you included in the book, back in the 30's or 40's. The error, as I recall, and you told me this story, was that the cops whose station was under threat or attack, used a different type of rifle to defend themselves. Sorry i am a little vague but its been a few years.

PS, when you autographed the book for me (I ordered three), I had you signoff about the battleship comment when you sent me my copy so I can prove prior knowledge !!!

Hey ! how about more articles about women ?? Guns I understand but women !! shessshhh !!.

God bless you and everyone else here.

Dear Sungun 09,

I made a typo to Mr. Ross too. I even proof read my post, obviously not enough, caught one typo and wrote ... you book instead of 'your book'.

I think that Ross's website used to have a section about ladies, prenuptial agreements, divorces, his BATF letter that he and/or his lawyer wrote to them, etc. The letter is still on his website.

His website is different looking now and I did not do a thorough search to see if he had more articles about women and them shooting.

Did you order your autographed books directly from him or have them signed at Knob Creek or another shooting event?

The battleship comment here is good and thank you.

Respectfully yours,

Catherine

I disagree and believe he showed us very clearly their connection. Both had been victimized and had made a personal decision that that would not happen again. The shared the belief that unjust laws -- and the people who made them for unjust purposes -- cased harm and prevented individuals from taking personal responsibility for their safety and other things.

They had developed a level of trust and agreed in their objectives and tactics. As he described in the books (about the 4 mobsters who had kept their mouths shut, resulting in none of them being charged with a murder), they could trust each other to keep clam. he also needed Cindy in order to accomplish part of his mission (to seduce a politician and leave him to be found in an embarrassing situation and to obtain semen specimens to plant at another scene).

I don't think you are giving Mr. Ross enough credit for how these characters are interwoven.

The one criticism of UC (from an English Lit major) I have heard (and agree with to a limited degree) is that it was too heavy on foreshadowing and explanation of what certain subtleties meant. On the other hand, you seem to have missed connections I found to be obvious. I'm sure I missed some you found to be obvious as well. Such is life.

I still don't fully understand who was the old lady living in a trailer who was the final evildoer to be offed at the end. Some have said Janet Reno. I doubt that she would be left to such a life by loyal leftists who adore her. Mr. Ross?

Catherine

a friend of mine had UC on his bookshelf. I called the publisher, and he in turn gave me John Ross' phone number. I called john and had him send me three copies.

I got the information on the battleship verified by a former Naval Captain, although there are other sources. If you ever see a video of a broadside from a battleship, notice the bow or stern area, they show no signs of movement. I had a long running disagreement with a friend over this so i went and did some research.

Johns website has some interesting stuff on it. Ya I was kidding about the women part. Ive already given up ..lol.

John Ross' book was GREAT just like it was written. I'm happy some of the posters, in this thread, didn't have a hand in it!!!!

Thanks for the book signing information, Sungun 09.

My late husband was a USN man, destroyer, later on with the Air NG-Fighter Wing (His home state not mine.) along with his NON government job. He was 5 years older than me and was in from late 1965 and on. (LBJ = ugh.) A break in service and then in the Air NG in his home state - over 20 years served. From Vietnam, around the world tours and so forth.

I love all kinds of books, movies and footage. He used to POINT some things out to me in books and movies... it was kind of neat.

I did not tour a battleship but I did tour his WW2 retrofitted for Vietnam, around the world tours, etc. destroyer ship in the VERY late 60's and on. Later on I was a USN Bride.

I have been by the dock when the ships came home from tours along with the airport homecomings too.

Good luck with your other situation! Grin.

Respectfully yours,

Catherine

Now, I know that I have to reread this again after I finish my library books. I own a copy but it is not 'signed'! Sigh. I could still get another book down the road though!

I agree with what you wrote and that is HOW I took/understood the U.C. book.

I think that some of us understand this book and in other books we may miss a POINT here and there where others GET IT right away. We are all different.

I wondered about that woman or RENO too. I wondered if that was HER in the book. Most likely some of us may like to think that it was but most likely SHE would be well taken care of in Real Life by those who supported her actions. Ugh. I can't write what I really want to write in that issue HERE.

Respectfully yours,

Catherine

Good read.

I get the same comments (always from men) about the sex scenes

That's because a good portion of American men are sexualy dysfunctional and have no idea how sex can define a personality or relationship at times.

Those guys also seem to be frustrated english lit majors.

Since we're bashing this book and all - the only part that stuck out to me was when I believe Henry was reloading his Mauser(Or .22 - I don't recall which) without looking at it and it was foreshadowed that one day that ability would save his life.... and never did.

You mean other than shooting the ATF Raid Team at Mr. Kane's place in Southern Indiana? Remember, he used the Remington .22 and reloaded as the BATmen shot the hinges off the door?
