STG 57/MAAS 57 or SIG 510 as sold in the US?

I have developed a hankering for one of these, and would love to know your experiences with them before I lay down the money for one.

Am not in the US, so they are a little cheaper around here..

I did have the good fortune of running a magazine through a full-auto Stg 57 about a year ago. It was a lavishly made, in the Swiss fashion. Likewise, it was also overweight, overwrought, and over complicated with a mushy trigger and primitive sights. There wasn't a single mechanical question on that gun that hadn't been answered with five times more steel than necessary. I can't think of anything the Stg 57 does that an M14 or FAL-pattern rifle couldn't do just as well.

I would own one in a second if I had the funds.

Wierdly enough a M-14 or FAL is a heck of a lot more expensive that the STG in these parts. Guess I need to find someone who actually owns one, and then try to convince them to let me try one out.

Weird indeed! How much do those STG 57s run in your neck of the woods (France, if I recall correctly)? Please post a range report if and and when you get your hands on one. I always love hearing firsthand accounts of unusual weapons.

I think you could by STG57 parts kits online-- I can't remember the link though-- very neat rifle...good luck, and post picts if you get one!

STG 57's in excellent condition run about 650 Euro's. These weapons are almost brand new, but have the happy switch deactivated.
A FAL in good condition can be had for about 1200-1500 Euros.
A M14 in good condition is north of 2K.

Since all of the above are classified as war weapons, one needs special permission to buy one. I have applied for one, should have it by May. The weapon in June/July if I am still enthusiastic about it.

I'd be all over one for that price!

Prices are strange in these parts.
On all original SVD or TIGR with the happy switch deactivated is about 1300, a reasonable M16/AR type of weapon 2 K+ a MP5 (semi only) about 2200, A Garand is good condition about 1100, a Styer AUG about 800.
An unissued all original Vz58 with Four Mags, original Cleaning kit, Bayonet, and Mag pouch is 350. (The Vz's are notorious for malfunctioning on demand, something that is mildly frowned upon)
go figure

Availability, our rifles need to be imported to you, with all duties and tariffs attached going the other direction. Except for the Garands, we may have left a few behind 60 some years ago. :)

Yup but please explain to me why a Mosin imported to America goes for about 25 Euro's and costs about 400 here?

Also officialls estimate that there are somewhere between 3-4x of actual weapons in France, than the officially declared number.

That may be a function of buyers - American sources found the Mosins, and contracted to buy them in bulk. France may not have buyers scouring the fomer Soviet Union looking for firearms to import to France. If you had a glut of the things, you might have low prices, too. That's my best guess.
