While we disagree with the decision to extend the comments period on this issue, it is now more important than ever that we give the anti-gunners what they profess to want-additional comments. Gun owners, Right-to-Carry permit holders, and all Second Amendment supporters must deluge the Department of the Interior with comments in support of this proposal! The new deadline for submitting comments is August 8, 2008.

Today is the deadline, does anyone know if anything has happened or any updates?

.

my guess is they do nothing until after they see which way the election goes, unless there is a push from on top.

opencarry.org posted a comment there that was rather wise and brought up a few points I had not considered.

even if carry is allowed in NPs, why does the limits of it have to be just slightly different than in NFs? The differences will indeed lead to innocent victims being arrested for violating a rule that is somewhat more complex than it at first appears. why not just adopt the same rule as NFs?

Over the last month or so, I've periodically read some of the comments.

I looked at clusters of responses throughout the original and extended comment period and have only seen overwhelming support for dropping the ban.

After reading hundreds of comments, I've found less than half a dozen wanting the NPS ban to stay in place.

Anyone see something different?

No,virtually all positives.
With the man from Idaho in charge, there appears to be the possibiltity the old Socialist, NPS dinosaurs, may be overcome.
I'm an optimist and think its better than 50-50 odds we'll soon be carrying in the NP's.

I would like the link to read comments as well. I posted months ago but never read the comments.
Thanks

Is there a way to view all the comments without having to punch the read this icon on each one?

so, how long do we have to wait for an answer?
I cant wait to open carry at a Yosemite campsite....

I was wondering the same, but I don't think there is a way. I've tried every trick and option without success.

"I cant wait to open carry at a Yosemite campsite...."

Uhhhh....I don't think the proposal includes open carry...

I think it does *if* the state law allows open carry (which California does on a limited basis, and Yosemite might very well meet the requirements)

In re reading the proposal, I found repeated mention of "concealed, loaded" firearms. The use of these terms over and over indicates to me that it means just that, and no mention of any other form of carry is made at all. I was disappointed when I first saw this but it's still a step in the right direction, though a smaller one than we'd like.

No, the proposal as it stands does not include open carry.

Be sure, when you make your comments, to ask for this to be remedied.

Don't forget that there are those who through either choice or necessity do not hide their sidearm. They have no less a right to self defense than does anyone else.

Time will tell

If there's a way to review the comments w/o clicking on each one, I haven't found it. Also, you may see the count go up after the 8/8/08 deadline as NPS scans in the faxes & letters it rec'd. There are quite a few of these in the early days of July.

The regulation proposed by DOI prohibits open carry. That's one reason why VCDL & the copetitioners recommended that members propose alternate regulations in their comments. There were thousands of comments which echoed the petitioner's requested wording which did not prohibit open carry and struck the onerous "analogous state lands" language.

Unfortunately, a lot of people got on regulation.gov from states that have state park carry restrictions and wrote "I support the proposed change" along with varying degrees of political statements. Anything is better than nothing I suppose, but I wonder how many of these people are going to end up with a citation and seized weapon for violating DOI's version of the regulation if that is the one that is finally entered.

My completely unscientific observation from different periods of time was that we had a consistent 2 to 1 - 3 to 1 advantage in the comments overall. This doesn't mean that we should stop and do nothing. We still need to pressure DOI to get the lead out...;) so to speak ... and stop stalling.
