well after complaining about bore fouling after only 7 shots, my rifle buddies here on THR told me to first:contact savage and second:polish the bore(break-in).. I did both. savage claims break-in is good but not needed, so I polished the bore with JB bore polish and BINGO. the 4 shot groups cloverleaf @ 75yds, and it took 12 shots before the fouling started.(initially my groups were real tight then scattering all over the paper after 6-7shots). I never had a NEW centerfire rifle before and didn't think any special preperation was required. nowadays the factories spend much less time on individual guns and this may be especially true with an economy rifle like savage. real pleased with the gun now and maybe if I had spent more the bore would have already been polished by the factory.

I have a new Savage 14 Classic in 243, and it's good right out of the box. I clean about once per 20 rounds.

the "Classic" is one of their higher quality rifles. I bought the cheaper 11F hunter model. maybe they put a little more hands-on time into the Classic. important to say that after a little time polishing the bore I'm getting great tight groups and more shots between fouling. I'm certain it will get better and better as pills spit down the pipe. I can not remember who on THR told me to try the polishing but THANKS... it worked:)

Glad it helped. Sad to say but I treat all firearms as "unfinished products" unless they prove otherwise to me. Of course I'm on a tight budget for shooting so I tend to go with less expensive items but I've seen some really expensive guns with some really obvious issues. :scrutiny:
