I shot a near 200 lb boar Monday night and butchered him yesterday. Of course, when you butcher, you get to observe wounding where you can't see any other way. I shot him with my "pig gun", now has 5 pigs to its credit. The shot was about 30 yards. The gun is a 20" sporterized SKS shooting Wolf 154 soft points which are cheap, but have served me well. I just don't see the need to handload any more hunting ammo for this gun considering how effective the 154 grain imported stuff has been.

This pig had a thick gristle plate on him. Boy, that bullet DID open up on that plate, massive internal damage below the shoulder, less so at the exit than the entry. It did, however, fully penetrate and exit and I didn't recover any bullet. The bullet traveled just below the spine, didn't break the spine, but the pig dropped in his tracks. I'm thinkin' I might have clipped the aorta above the heart, but I didn't really look for that when I gutted him.

The more game I shoot with this 154 grain soft point stuff, the more impressed I am with it. I see no need to go on any sort of reloading development campaign with the rifle. To add to this, the rounds are more accurate than lighter bullets, giving me 2.5 MOA which is more'n enough considering night hunting ranges in thick woods. Longest pig shot I've made with it is 50 yards. I shot a deer with a handload 25 years ago with it at 80 yards and that load only shot about 3.5 MOA. It was a neck shot, too. :D But, I don't need my sub-moa rifles for night hunting pigs and I do appreciate the chance for a second shot on multiple pigs should I be given the opportunity. The combination of lack of recoil and the semi-auto function of the gun gives me that.

Good to know the 154s are working well, Ive only seen them available a couple times, most of what i can get on the shelf here are 125s.
That said i do load for my SKS, just because i CANT get decent expanding bullets that easily...tho i did try some wolf hollow points that seem like they will work ok.
My current load are 150ppu btsp, at about 2100, and im hoping those will work as well as the 154s your using.

www.ammotogo.com usually has the 154s, but do have 'em out of stock a lot. I've got several hundred rounds stashed and don't use 'em for plinking or such, so they should last me a while. :D I used to handload the old Sierra 135 grain Pro Hunter intended for the .30-30 handguns. It was a .308" bullet and the 3.5 MOA accuracy of the stuff reflected that. Yeah, .311" bullets can present a problem for the handloader. I do have ideas for handloads, but why bother when the 154 grain stuff works well? :D

I'm shooting an AR-15 chambered in 7.62x39 and even with its .310 barrel it's sub moa for 3 shots at 100. I'm using the .308 dia. 135 FTX and CFE BLK. Between that bullet and the newly released .310 123 Gold Dot. I shot the 123 Fusion factory load into water jugs and I was very impressed.

With those 2 options I have no real reason to try the 154 SP's but if I find some local i may buy them for the heck of it. If I ever need to throw a 150ish grain bullet from the AR-15 I'll just use my 30AR.

....no need to fix something that ain't broke!

One thing I have noticed over the years, especially since the interweb came around, is that folks have different perceptions and expectations from their ammo. While one guy is perfectly happy with their ol' venerable CORE-LOKTs, the next guy has never had luck with them and thus, avoids them like the plague. That is why I always advise folks to use what works for them on these types of forums and to quit chasing that elusive "Magic Bullet" that so many others do. This is really true on medium size game like deer, hogs and Black Bear. Seems you found yours....good for you!

Well, some calibers demand magic bullets, like .223 used on pigs. But, I don't see the need with a .30 caliber bullet of decent weight. :D I was going to set my M4 up with night vision and might do that someday, anyway, but I kinda trust that 154 grain .30 caliber bullet more. I've shot a lot of game with a .30 caliber standard spitzer bullet from .30-30s, both pistol and rifle, and never had a need to step up to a 170 grain bullet let alone a partition or something.

As you allude to, use what you like.
