I know the reason for overnight shipping of handguns, but overnight doesn't really mean it will arrive overnight. I just checked my UPS overnight tracking number of my firearm that was shipped Friday afternoon (to MS) and it is in transit in CT. The updated arrival date is actually three days later on 12/3. Thankfully, I shipped it with a free manufacturer shipping label, but I've paid in the past for so-called overnight shipping and assumed it arrived the following day. My point is, UPS is not providing true overnight shipping. My expensive handgun is sitting in a warehouse and not at the final destination as promised, overnight. That's wrong.

Where are you in Ohio? I am in SW. Anyway about UPS I have had the same problem too but I have never shipped any guns so the stuff wasn't of any great value...

Read the fine print. Overnight shipping means next business day delivery. If you shipped on Friday, Monday delivery is considered overnight.

From the UPS website:

UPS Next Day Air -- Next business day delivery by 10:30 a.m., 12:00 noon, or end of day, depending on destination

Yeah, Saturday delivery is an exception and always has been since that service was started.

Ah, the good old fine print rule. So, basically one is safe Monday thru Thursday.

If you want true overnight shipment on Friday you can get it but it will literally cost you an arm and a leg. Btw, if I'm not mistaken, if you would ship a firearm on a Friday you are the one who would be held responsible for violation of federal firearms laws, not the shipping company, if the gun should be stolen over the weekend.

Honestly, why are you upset ? You should have known this. I don't see how you could not have known that overnight shipping companies NEVER deliver on Saturday unless you specifically request it. Never have. Do you stand by your mail box on Sundays waiting for the postal carrier to stop by? No you don't because everyone knows the post office is closed on Sundays. (unless UPS workers go on strike) :)

I've sent plenty of them ground, it'll get there fine, assuming it isn't kicked/crushed to death :D

Archer1945,

What laws are you talking about. My understanding is that the overnight issue is forced by UPS and FedEx because guns would go missing when shipped ground.

Not sure why you're blaming the fine print... It's very common knowledge to shippers that "overnight" and "next day air" shipping means next business day delivery.

The person that steals the firearm would be the only person in violation of any law.

The government could care less if you ship it overnight or ground.

This is my understanding as well, but it confuses me. We have to pay more because their employees are prone to steal guns?

I'm not upset and pardon me for not keeping up on "air postal" information. Just because you obviously keep up to date regarding the delivery of mail items, some of us are preoccupied with other day to day events and the mailing of items is not in the top ten of "things I should know". Geez...

And by the way, my last FRIDAY overnight air shipment to S&W did arrive on saturday morning. According to the tracking number it was received and signed for by the guard. So, apparently it may arrive on saturday or it may arrive on the next business day, monday.

It's a liability thing. The longer the gun is in UPS's possession, the greater its chance of going missing. The chance is still small, but they want it out of their possession as soon as possible. That way, they minimize their chances of having been "the source" of a crime weapon. Thus they force you to overnight guns. It has nothing to do with the law, if it did go missing you would not be in legal trouble. But the company won't reimburse you if the gun disappears and they find you didn't ship it overnight, since you violated their policies.
