The U.S. administration in Iraq has agreed to pay 200,000 to 250,000 former Iraqi soldiers a monthly sum of between $50 to $250, according to an announcement by the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) on June 23. The announcement also said that about 300,000 former soldiers will receive a one-time payment, beginning July 14. Former Iraqi soldiers repeatedly have protested after U.S. administrator Paul Bremer disbanded the military in May. After meeting with members of the U.S. administration on June 19, when the initial payment was delayed, protest leaders said that U.S. administrators had until 0800 GMT on June 27 to answer their demands for back pay or for their jobs to be reinstated -- or their protests would turn violent, including suicide attacks.

"their protests would turn violent, including suicide attacks"

Gee, can I do this to pick up some extra Christmas money this year?

How does that old line go?

"I deal in lead friend and business is good!!!"

I know how to pay them

Wouldn't live targets make bootcamp weapons training a lot more realistic?;)

I haven't read the details, but I image this is a stop-gap measure until the Iraqi oil money starts to roll in and is used to cover the expenses. Iraqi revolution is a crisis -a few billion $ isn't.

Atticus, I think you are right. The administration is hoping this will buy them some time.

But, I'm not sure it's going to work. I think these "former" Iraqi soldiers will smile and accept their pay....... and when the sun goes down.......... watch out!

Guerrillas are already hitting the pipelines and I think this activity will increase as time goes on. Sabotage of oil/gas infrastructure (especially pipelines) is an extremely low risk/low cost/low effort operation which will cause major damage to British and US efforts to get the oil back on line.

And these attacks will RADICALLY INCREASE if the coalition goes forward with their Mosul/Haifa pipeline plans.
