One of my many heroes of the Vietnam War passed away. A humble soldier that had incredible skill and didn't brag about it. Peaceful journey, and rest well, you saved a lot of your fellow soldiers.

It is one thing to assume he was depressed; if so then I just have to say what he did out there he did it for his fellow soldiers, who also werent out there on their own free will. What he did to save their lives im sure would be approved by God.
If he found out he had a deliberating health condition that he didn't want to sit through, cant blame him too much but he was a hero and will be remembered as such. Hope his family will handle this tough time

Another short mention of this soldier.

Some of the links have more detail than the main article:

“It was the ultimate hunting trip: a man hunting another man who was hunting me,” Mawhinney told the Los Angeles Times in 2000. “Don’t talk to me about hunting lions or elephants; they don’t fight back with rifles and scopes. I just loved it.”

“You get to the point where you start living like an animal. You act like an animal, you work like an animal, you are an animal. All you think about is killing,” he told the Times. “When you fire, your senses start going into overtime: eyes, ears, smell, everything. Your vision widens out so you see everything, and you can smell things like you can’t at other times. My rules of engagement were simple: If they had a weapon, they were going down.”
