Application sent in July 2. Credit card charged middle of July. Permit date 9/10/09. Envelope mailed 9/15/09. Arrived sometime between 9/17 and 10/1 (was out of town).

:)

I got mine recently as well, and was dissappointed to discover that Nevada dropped reciprocity with Utah this summer, and Colorado only accepts Utah permits if you are a Utah resident. :(

Most states have very stringent requirements for a CCW, and those states that reciprocate are finally starting to take a close look at the lax requirements and practically non-existent training and background checks required for a UTAH permit. UTAH instructors do classes in other states, handing out licenses to non-UTAH residents that have never even been to UTAH. I'm happy to see that some of the other states are starting to wake up. Wish Texas would.

Griz44- No idea what your problem is. I lived in Utah and took a class that was either 6 or 8 hours (it was 12 years ago and I forget which) and underwent a full background check with fingerprints and the whole nine yards. Also had to demonstrate safe gun handling in loading and clearing the weapon.

Not sure why you think Utah requirements are less stringent than other states. The only thing some states require beyond this is a live fire exercise but I did that in another state and all you had to do was pull the trigger five times and make the gun go bang. Didn't matter if you even hit the target. Big deal. Instructors giving Utah classes in other states must meet the same standards as those working in state so what's the dif?

I moved out of Utah in 2001 but I have maintained my Utah permit. It can renewed by mail as they figure taking the class once is enough. I agree.

You seem to be anti-CCW. Why? Do you know something the rest of us don't? I am unaware of any serious problems with permit holders being dangerous or unsafe. If you have info please share it.

DM - Oregon is one of the worst states in the Union for CCW. Why don't they recognize neighboring states (Idaho) CCW holders?

Griz- are you a CCW holder? I'm also disappointed with Nevada. I guess I'll not go there again. If a state doesn't recognize my CCW, I don't go there or spend any money with businesses in that state..

Griz44 -

You will typically hear that out of state Utah designated instructors require applicants to shoot. Mine did. Plus, Utah uses identification information and fingerprints to do a background check.

But of greater importance:

1) Government entities don't have the right to decide who is fit to exercise fundamental rights.

2) Individual accountability should be demanded. People carrying guns have a personal obligation to understand the moral implications of lethal force and to get the training to prepare for the responsibility.

3) All the things a person can do wrong with a gun are already illegal. If someone does one of these things, prosecute them.

4) If someone is inclined to do something wrong with a gun, they are also inclined to ignore gun restrictions and carry concealed without a permit.

If you don't understand these points, move here to California. You would have lots of company.

There is an instructor in Denton that advertises a 3 hour class, no shooting to get a CCW. No test. Basically just show up. He advertises the class as an easy alternative to the complicated Texas CHL license. That is my objection. As far as me bieng anti CCW? OK, let me clarify, I have a CHL and I am a certified Texas CHL instructor. My objection is an outsider coming into our state and deliberately circumnavigating the intent of the system and the law as it was passed. Many of us worked tirelessly in the early 90's to get this bill passed, facing opposition from the public, the DPS itself and all the regular anti's out there. I have hundreds of hours of my time as a volunteer and an unpaid lobbyist to get this in front of the public and get it passed. I hate slimy lawyers that try to find ways to cheat the system. Texas will allow an out of state resident to take a course and get a license here, but the course is our approved course materials and is done in our own state only. Hope that clears up my objection. I am about as pro carry as you can get, I even wear mine when I am at home. Harry, I am with you as far as the right to carry. I like the point you made about understanding the laws and being qualified. The Texas course is 90% of that very topic. The law, non-violent dispute resolution, safe handling and storage. Check out the topic material, I have it all listed at www.burntpowder.com

Aha.

There we go.

Business competition.

:D

I would caution against basing your opinion on one advertisement.

Not sure how he claims a 3 hour class as this DOES NOT MEET STATE REQUIREMENTS as far as I know.

Like I said, I hold a UT permit and the requirements compare to the 3 other states in which I have obtained permits.

BTW- How tough do you think requirements for a CWP should be considering the original intent of the Constitution seems clear that being a law-abiding citizen is all that is needed?
