uzi:the ultimate home defence gun?

Hey, don't laugh. Before the Democrats caused the value to skyrocket, I used to keep my Uzi Carbine in a gun rack behind the seat of my pickup. Finally put it in the safe when the value of the truck gun went beyond that of the truck.

I've shot a few Uzis and I like them; but they are pretty well outclassed by any number of firearms these days - MP5s, short ARs, short AKs, etc.

In an ideal world where we could have full automatics for defensive use it would be great but not ideal.
I have never shot an Uzi, much less a full auto one.
But, one round of 3" 00 buck does about the equivalent of 9 or so rounds from the Uzi in one shot. Shot for shot you would have the Uzi outclassed for lead going down range.
You can choose between less lethal, birdshot, buck or slugs with a shotgun depending on how far you need to shoot, whether or not you need to kill, and what you are worried about shooting through.
Can't do that with the Uzi.

yo chk it!

I always wanted an UZI (--there so 80's, cool) but this belt buckle is as close as I have come.

The back says "The best there is"

A shotgun will serve better for "home defense" than a glorified pistol.

Uzis are fun (I've fired a class 3, w00t!) but they are not the best choice inside a domicile. I would choose my Glock 21 over an Uzi for use indoors.

YMMV

If we're talking semi-auto it makes more sense to me to just get a high capacity mag for a normal 9mm pistol (my house CZ has a factory 25rd mag). If you are going to have a big bulky heavy carbine I would go with a 223 since it has more energy (my house carbine is a 14.5" M4). I have owned a full-auto UZI but a semi-auto 16" 9mm makes no sense to me.

With the exception of mag capacity, it sounds like the Hi-Point carbines have all the advantages (9mm, reliability, magazine-in-grip loading) of the Uzi 9mm and none of the disadvantages (heavy, bulky, poor sights) ... :scrutiny:

Now, if the Hi-Points could take Uzi mags... :D :D :D

What about mirco-uzis? I've never heard or seen much anything about those. Or is that a good thing?

I own a Micro Uzi and a HR4332 Uzi carbine. :D They're both way down on my list of guns to use for self-defense, even without considering the probable post-shoot demonization of full-auto in a defensive shooting.

The ROF on the Micro is ~1200 rpm with an open bolt, ~1800 rpm with a closed bolt. Fun on the range, but accuracy really starts to suffer beyond 10 yards. The carbine is more controllable. If you're in a defensive situation and have the option of using a long arm, a rifle or shotgun round will provide superior results over a pistol round, so why limit yourself? I'd much rather use one of my ARs or my 870 for serious stuff.

Ahh, the MP5.

This caught my eye:

the UZI is HEAVY. . . . And its barrel, for all its weight, is still too short to add any serious velocity to the 9x19 bullets.
Seems to me I was reading an article recently that stated that subgun-length barrels (around 10") are actually optimal for the 9mm Luger cartridge. Pistol-length barrels don't quite permit a full head of steam, but by the time you get to a 16" carbine, friction from the long rifle barrel actually brings the bullet back down to pistol speeds. Somewhere in between was the sweet spot -- e.g., an Uzi barrel.

Anyone able to confirm or deny that?

Even if so, I doubt it'd be a big velocity gain; the 9mm is a different beast from the .357 Magnum cartridge, whose case capacity and slower powder charge allows it to really take off like a rocket in a rifle barrel.

The UZI is a wonderful HD weapon, to fight your way to a rifle caliber carbine that you should have picked up in the first place.

It's a pistol.
