Not sure where to ask this bit I Have inherited quite a few guns and would like to get an idea what they are worth....can someone lead me In the right direction?
Welcome to the Forum!

Are you asking about appraisal service providers or asking us for approximate valuations of the guns?
If the latter, then we would of course need a list of the guns and some pictures would be helpful.

Also, there is a website called GunBroker which can show you what similiar guns have actually sold for recently.

Gunbroker will show you completed options if you login and use the advanced search.

Armslist can give you a reasonable range if you can sort out any fake posting(which are much fewer now a days).

Those options assume you know what you have.

Condition is also a big determining factor. The price difference between a gun in pristine condition with the box and everything else it came with can be worth twice as much as the same thing in poor condition. Knowing how to correctly grade your guns makes a big difference when pricing them.

Go to gunbroker and see what there selling for. Not what there asking but the ones that have bids on them or have sold.

Depends on what your trying to do, for just general information, or trying to find a price to list them for sale...gunbroker is a good place to start. Looking to insure them...that may depend on the collection. If there are rare or collectible items, that may require an actual appraisal. With a list and photos, the members here can usually give you a good ballpark or at least point you in the right direction.

I am going to assume you fall into the category of....I got all this stuff, I really don't care about it, I know it is worth something, how do I find that out and not get taken advantage of. Been down this road when my mother passed and I got thousands....yes THOUSANDS of these little, and some big, blue china animals, I learned a great deal, some used to bring drugs in during the late 1890's, some really interesting stuff.

As to guns however, it is going to be difficult if you don't have any contacts.....but I bet you do have someone. A friend, a friends son, someone is likely a "gun nut".....but even if he is be cautious. It would not be the first time an elder passed a gun gets turned in that was in his closet that no one knew he had (for good reason) and it ends up being worth 6 figures.

I would suggest getting a few sources, check the large auction houses, Rockisland.com, is a well respected, and large house, same with james julia/morphy.

Just remember you will get less money selling these then selling yourself, however if there are any legal or paper work hoops to jump through they will take care of all that.

Good luck.

Oh and if someone says don't worry about the paperwork....HUGE RED FLAG. no matter what it is even if it is a reproduction black powder item....this is where you need to educate yourself a little or just pay for a well respected dealer to take care of this for you.

..and if you DO get them appraised, make sure you don't SELL to the same person/company that appraised them. Specifically hire an appraisal done.

There is lots of expertise on this board, and with a list and pictures, as mentioned above, you could get a lot of good advice/estimates.

Additionally, there are forums (fora?) dedicated to specific brands, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Colt, Winchester, etc.

Good luck, Patti!

You will at least get good ball park ideas.....if you are worried just block out SN#'s.....in some cases the sn range/box/paperwork......can add value....or even LARGE VALUE to an item....don't toss any paperwork.

We still do not know if we are talking about a lot of Mossbergs and H&R single shots or S&W Registered Magnums and H&H shotguns.

If the former, paying for appraisals is a waste of time and money; if the latter, contacting James Julia or Rock Island Auctions for serious appraisals would be wise.

Valid point... Some guns are worth less than 50 bucks and some hundreds of thousands.

OP
I would say gather a list of the make/model of a few and post them along with some good pictures.

My condolences on your loss

Yes I really agree, and this is where if she has someone close that she can trust to look at it and say at least yea that is a 10/22 it is a tomato stake (joke....thats a joke here) or that is some kind of german war rifle....see all those nazi markings on it....you might have someone else take a look at that....is it a RC 98k, or is it a Mauser G41.

And for the OP, A used 10/22 (depending) a sub $200 gun
An RC 98k (german bolt rifle captured by the russians usually called an RC) ~$800-1200...just amazes me what these go for now.
Mauser G41 (not common at all german semi automatic rifle) Last one I saw sold...as in SOLD for $17,000...all matching with bring back papers.

Really OP, we don't know what we are talking here, and I really hope I did not put thoughts in your head of college education paid for with money left over.....but there is a chance....and if it was an older person, who was really into this.....just be careful.

Another thing that is handy and works pretty is using google to figure out what an item is....google can take a photo of the item and then you can do an image search for that item....it might not work but it is free and easy.

Not sure is crapple can do the same thing.

I really hope we don't have fruit stand fanbois here like we do ruger fans. :neener:

Patti, make a list of the guns. Make, model, caliber and a rough description. Post that list on this forum. I can absolutely assure you THR will give you honest ball park figures. These guys are good.

The latter and thankyou all for the advise...I am making a list of the ones I don't know about with pics and I will be posting shortly...you have all been great and helpful.

A lot of reasonable information. However, your easiest way is write down the Make and Model numbers for each one and go to any online search. An appraiser will give you a market value and a bill to do so. A broker will list a jacked-up price to cover their cost of listing & transfer paperwork. Some inherited guns are priceless (like the Savage 30-30 that my father had and gave to me).
