Cant find any useful information, so I thought Id ask the people who know!

As is stated in the title, Id like to know something about the performance of a 12" barreled .357, as compared to shorter barreled ones, maybe even possible variences in loads (125 grain bullets, 150 grain ETC.)

Josh - I have no figures to hand but - am aware of just how much more velocity I get putting rounds thru my 16" barrel Win 94 - compared with say thru a 5" N frame.

I load 158's (gascheck swc's) over VV N-110 - and these go well. Let us imagine a high load quoted as 1500 fps for this bullet weight - which probably is relative to a 6" test barrel - your long tube may see an improvement of something like 100 fps, the results being I imagine more profound with slow powder true mag loads.

I expect there are some figures around - sorry no help on that but could be someone has some definitive info.

I'd agree, it has more to do with the stoutness of the load, and the speed of the powder, you'd obviously get more improvement from the slower magnum powders.
There is no 'normal' correlation, because it depends wildly on what caliber and barrel length you started with, and the load you're shooting.

I'd have to say thet there's no 'standard' correlation because of what barrel length and caliber you started with, the speed and intensity of your load.
The hotter the load, the less likely of getting diminishing returns.
Also, the longer barrel, the more chance of developing pressure signs, right? Not so sure about that one....
As always, the chrony is the best 'lie detector' in this case.

I chrono'd some Federal 125gr JHP's in several revolvers, and a 10" Contender barrel. The 10" averaged right at 2000fps!!! Got 1600 from a 6" M28, and over 1300 from a 3" M65. Hot stuff, I tells ya.

Thanks for the info, Ive been looking at a 12in barreled .357 revolver, at a good price.....sounds like it has alot of potential.

However, I assume the real strength would be in the increased sight radius.
