Nope - not blaming the caliber, or even laughing at the rifles - but at the people who think those weapons automatically make them tough or dangerous.

Not to imply that gangbangers are good shots, or that soldiers aren't....but I recall that during Viet Nam the US supposedly averaged about 10,000 rounds per confirmed enemy casualty. In WW2, it was about 7k round per, and in World War 1, something on the order of 17,000 rounds of small arms ammo from both sides were fired per casualty.

Same as it every was - I was in the army 1970-73, when there was still a draft, and there were guys who were in because some judge gave them the choice of the military of jail (big no-brainer, that) Some were genuine badasses, most were just meatheads or screwballs.

There were a few junkies who went AWOL in the first couple days, but of the rest, they either got over their cranial rectitus and got with the program or went to the stokade (some went AWOL before going to the slammer -). This is not to say that they all turned into model soldiers, but a lot of them found a home and got their **** together (some sooner than others), others just 'grew-up', but the Big Green Machine had a tendency to sort them out out pretty quickly.

In today's all volunteer military I suspect they are less tolerant of trouble makers than back when many were drafted and not at all happy aabout it. JMO.

As to no-goodniks in the military, I'll put forth the example of one of my cousins who went Marine. He was a piss-poor student in high-school, and the sort of mean l'il bastard that movies and cable news get parents into a tizzy about. After his four years were up, he was a disciplined, highly effective, and no-less mean bastard. He's a cop now. (Scary thought, to be sure.)

I grew up in the Bay Area. Had more then my share and dealings with crypts and bloods there. They did their thing and tried to kill each other. Union City had their own little mafia. Sacramento same crap. Reno, lots of vandalism and tagging our equipment. Been a few killings here to, little kids 14,15,16 years old shooting each other in the park.
