I stumbled onto this video. It shows a CCW shooting of a gas station robber:

Here is of the same but not as long and with better sound:

This might help illustrate the adrenaline influenced speech that one is prone to under high stress.

Also note the use of the cell phone during the shooting. I think this is something we should accept as a high possibility and practice one handed shooting with this reality in mind.

You're not supposed to use cell phones at the gas station.

Duke of Doubt,

Please tell me you are not being serious. What would you suggest that he did? Just yell for the police to come.

BTW, 30 post per day? Do you sit in front of a computer all day?

I think Mythbusters did a pretty good job of *trying* to get a cell phone to spark off some sort of gas station fire and failed. "Busted" Besides, he's inside the office, not out by the pumps.

SIRVEYR: "Duke of Doubt, Please tell me you are not being serious. What would you suggest that he did? Just yell for the police to come. BTW, 30 post per day? Do you sit in front of a computer all day?"

I was making a joke.

It's been a SLOW month at the home office, and we've had three blizzards. And to be honest, I've had a lot of fun with some recent threads.

Ironic how the CC holder looks like he'd be the BG the way he's dressed. You never know.

So what exactly does a bad guy look like? since you seem to know....

I couldn't see crap in that video... The owner of the Service Station should have gotten a new video system in 1985...

I had to watch it two or three times to follow what was going on. I honestly didn't like what I saw in terms of it being a "good shoot" legally, at least in my state. It would probably be O.K., but I wonder why he didn't shout a warning or command to the assailant before shooting him in the back. "It's inconvenient" or "It might be dangerous" doesn't cut it. However, I don't have a problem personally with the shoot, considering the circumstances, and wouldn't mind seeing him skate.

From what I could make out of the video, the tactics that the CCW holder employed were awful. But the video was so bad as to make it tough to critic it beyond the general statement.

Regarding verbal warnings...

Verbal warning in a situation like that are the effective equivalent of reading someone their rights when they are arrested for murdering their cell mate. Anyone how lived through that and sued / filed a complaint because he wasn't "warned" needs to put the crack pipe down. You do not assault and burglarize old ladies without at least a cursory thought, however brief, that you might get shot... Foreseeable consequence.

Duke of Doubt,

Please don't take this as a snide comment when I say that the reason you don't shout a warning or throw a spoiler is that this isn't TV or the movies.

If you have discerned a situation to be one in which lethal force is justified, a shot to the back greatly diminishes the probability that the BG is going to have the opportunity to shoot you. No need to let them know you are there... Heck, the BG might have been hell bent on killing that clerk and just knowing that you were going to stop him he might have put some extra oomph into beating that poor clerk until you pressed the trigger.

Don't play fair. Stop the situation as quickly and decisively as possible and hope that no one gets killed or worse.

Yeah, I wonder how they ever catch any of these dudes with the $hitty video systems these places have.

Even the banks, God forbid have trouble telling even the race of most of the robbers, the pics are so poor.

The stuff off the shelf at Radio Shack would be a huge upgrade for most of these places !

Back to comment about communication device(s), I had several customers who were a few blocks from the WTC on Sept 11th 2001. No land lines or cell communication would work. The only means of communication they had, that would work, was Nextel PPT. Maybe someone with more knowledge of why this may have been possible, could enlighten the group.

As for me, my family members all got 'pay as you go' cheap Nextel's as supplemental com device. They were cheap and seemed to be worth the extra expense. It is like having unlimited range walkie talkies (when in range of a cell tower(s)). I have seen the havoc of Hurricane evacuation several times first hand in New Orleans , VA Beach and the Outer Banks of NC. It ain't purty. Reliable long range intervehicle, interpersonal communication is a must. Otherwise, you will soon become visually separated from other members of your group. Perhaps never to be rejoined or only after the crisis is past.
