As most of you know I don't keep anything but my CCWs here at the abode. Well sometimes a SG. My stuff is off- site, in an walk-in-vault.
I get a call to try something new as far as shooting is concerned, we are gonna use carbines. I normally just borrow one that is a friends and he is gonna be there anyway. I chose to visit another old friend instead.
To many years ago I was given a Model 94 in 30-30 by a very close friend, and we have been through thick and thin for I was reminded 26 yrs now.
I retrieve my Model 94 and say hello to my other little friends. Oh my its been awhile, I'd forgotton just how beautiful the wood is on this one. That special walnut with burls that swirls...and that deep deep blueing of a time gone by. they just had a way with guns , blue and wood at one time. Well I recall that ding, and the day I scratched her there...she didn't mind, she understood it wasn't my fault that tree had thorns, and Mr. buck had decided to make a shot as difficult as he could. 170 gr STHP later proved him wrong.
I show up with thi old friend and the friend whom gave it to me says, what are you doing with a gun case? I replied I brought a rifle. " Hey Steve you do shotguns you haven't shot rifles in a..." I interupted, unzipped the case, threw the lever and handed it to him. His jaw dropped.
"I'm gonna run what I brung, what's the COF?" . My good buddy I think was still trying to recover and hide it by saying, " You checked out on that thing? I mean you don't swing it and you do have to AIM it...and you have no scope'.
I run what I brung, I never really learned to shoot a scope, being poor growing up has some advantages. I did add swivel studs sometime in history and naturally I'm the only one with iron sights and a leather sling. I must be getting old. At least there are guns with wood and blue....not usually the case.
I couldn't totally get too far from my roots, I used a shell pouch for extra rds, I was going to pretend this was a very serious 'quail walk" and keep that sucker fed at all times.
At least my buddy was there or I would have been the oldest fart, still I did let my rifle skills get rusty. My shotgunning skills came in handy on a moving target ( thank you gun guru in the sky) I never missed, I was the only one to do so. Not bad for a old fart with iron sights 35-65 yds.
I hadn't forgotten to put on sling for the long range part, and I can still get into one standing, kneeling and prone... eyes not what they once were, and 125 yds is a bit out there for irons for an old boy that hasn't in while. Did my ticker good to hear the steel. I kept that sucker fed, 30-30 are not as big around as 12 ga...I managed.
"Mister, can I see your gun, I've only seen those on "OLD Western movies my dad likes to watch". [ State Statues don't allow the shooting of young whippersnappers...I need to check into changing that ] Of course I had to give MOA and let "jr" shoot the thing...OK I'm a cool old fart now...that's good -right?
I pull out the old shoe can, my buddy drops jaw again..."OMG you still have that from when..." Yep...I pull the patch applied with Kleenbore Formula 3 from breech to muzzle using a pc of rawhide with a slit in it. This is all this gun has ever had in it's bore. Bore is as shiney as a new mint penny. "Jr" is totally blown away by this...had to explain everything from Shinola [which was a brand of shoe polish] to the rawhide. This was what my uncle taught me when I was a brat. This kid now wants a blue and wood lever action "thutty-thutty", I'm such a bad influence.
So I have an old friend spending the night with me, we didn't embarrass each other, shot better than we are "supposed to" , and proved again its the fella being the wood not what's in the wood and blue often times.
I don't shoot this gun often, it is very sentimental. I rarely clean bores but this one will be put away again for who knows how long. If accused of being sentimental,or having cleaned a gun--I deny it.
Ahh, wish you see her, but I have no camera, take a deep whiff, you might recognize the smell of wood, blue, leather and Formula 3.
Say goodnight to my old friend.
