I've been playing with my M1A Standard with great results for the past 3-4 years. I recently decided to take the plunge and undergo a little bit of modernization project, but not the typical route most would choose to go. I've gone from a Boyd's wood stock to a foliage green VLTOR Modstock. I delved into the guts to make some changes as well.
The new specs are as follows:
External
-2007 Springfield M1A Standard w/ H&R trigger group.
-VLTOR Modstock with eMod buttstock (comfort abounds w/ storage galore!) and tango Down Battlegrip
-Smith Enterprise Weaver M21 Mount (best $125 I ever spent on a firearm)
-TPS TSR-W Low rings (the best tactical style Weaver type rings on the market as far as I know)
-Nikon Monarch 3-12x42mm w/ side parallax adjustment & BDC
-Smith Enterprise Vortex flash hider, using original castle nut
-VersaPod Picatinny adapter sling swivel
-LaRue Integrated Bipod
Internal
-USGI extractor
-Sadlak NM spring guide
-Sadlak piston
General Comments
The rifle in its original configuration was a 2MOA rifle (10 shot groups). The trigger group has a nice pull and a crisp let-off, I feel no need for trigger work at the moment. Feels like it's around 5lbs, but I don't have a trigger pull gauge. Unified gas system will be coming soon. The trigger group fits the VLTOR much tighter than the Boyds wood stock. it is tight enough that I'm not sure if it will need to be bedded. I expect accuracy to be slightly better due to the tighter fit, combined with the other mods. The stock allows for a much easier handling rifle than the traditional stock. The eMod buttstock is great. It is very comfortable, and will allow me to have extended sessions. The eMod is waaay overbuilt for the 5.56mm in my opinion. With this setup, the stock extension is perfect when it is flush at the top. You'd have to have a tall scope setup to need it raised any higher. Folks may question the standard profile barrel, but this thing shoots! It will get rebarreled when the time comes, probably with a medium weight. the VersaPod adapter has a gap between the rail and the stock, but this may be by design, so that any pressure exerted on the stock is further away from the front band. The LaRue bipod is a huge improvement over a standard Harris. They made a new interface for it, rather than the clasp & small knob of the original. The large knob when loosened, allows the legs to swivel. It can be tightened down to correct slight canting issues or uneven surfaces.
I have been able to shoot the rifle for funtion testing, but not accuracy testing. The only ammo I have at present is Paki surplus and Remington UMC; not the best for judging accuracy. I will report back when I get to shoot some reloads through it. It also seems to really like Federal Powershock Soft Points.
Not your typical EBR setup. All told, it weighs in at 13 lbs. with an empty mag, measured on a bathroom scale. The scale is accurate to half pound increments.
