I am looking at ordering a vortex viper pst 6-24x50 and had a question that I can't seem to find the answer to.

On vortex's website they list the eye relief at 4", is that the distance your eye needs to be from the optic or is that the overall size of the window?

I would imagine 4" is Maximum.

And it will much closer then that at 24x I betcha!!

I can't say for sure about the Vortex Viper. Many scopes list the eye relief at the lowest power setting and the highest setting. You will have more eye relief at the lowest power setting. Some scopes have the same eye relief at all magnifications. Unless that scope is one of the latter 4" is probably the maximum. Expect a lot less eye relief on 24X.

I've never fooled with the Viper, but a big part of the reason I no longer have the Diamondback is because of very short eye relief.

Eye relief rules of thumb

Eye relief is the distance your eye will be from the scope where you have the maximum (largest opening) view through the scope.

There is a little variance from the given measurement. As you slide your head towards and away from the scope you see the view open up and close down but for some distance in the middle it will be at the largest opening.

If you are too far from the scope you notice the "picture" gets small and the same happens if you get too close.

For a hand gun your arms should be extended the same distance each time to get repeatable results.
