Anti-Violence Group Asking Redskins to Withdraw From Fund-Raiser

Washington D.C. - A fund-raiser the Washington Redskins (website - news) are taking part of has one D.C. anti-violence group crying foul.

The Examiner reports The Violence Policy Center is asking the team withdraw its participation in a shooting fund-raiser sponsored by the National Rifle Association set for later this month.

The N.R.A. is backing legislation to repeal the District's ban on handguns and strict regulations of rifles.

The executive director of the Violence Policy Center, which is working to reduce gun violence, has sent a letter to Redskins owner Dan Snyder asking him to "end all participation" in the event.

Josh Sugarmann calls it a "conflict of interest" since the Redskins charitable foundation's mission is dedicated to the health and wellness of youth.

NRA lobbying to repeal D.C. gun laws

A D.C. anti-violence group asked the Washington Redskins Tuesday to withdraw from a shooting fundraiser sponsored by the National Rifle Association, which is lobbying for the repeal of D.C. gun laws.

The Violence Policy Center, a national nonprofit organization working to reduce gun violence, sent Washington Redskins owner Daniel M. Snyder a letter urging him to "end all participation" by the team in the Oct. 25 event.

The NRA is backing legislation sponsored by Rep. Mark Souder, R-Ind., and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, to repeal the District's ban on handguns and strict regulation of rifles. The legislation is vigorously opposed by Mayor Anthony Williams, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Charles Ramsey and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.

"Mayor Williams supports strong gun-control laws and is not a sport shooter," said William's spokesman Vincent Morris Tuesday. "But he'll let the Redskins make the decision on whether or not to go ahead with their fundraiser."

Norton and Ramsey could not be reached for comment.

Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the Violence Policy Center, said the fundraiser appears to be a conflict of interest.

"The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation's involvement with an organization whose mission is to repeal Washington, D.C.'s gun laws cannot be reconciled with the mission of the foundation," Sugarmann said. He noted that the team foundation is dedicated to the "health and wellness" of youth.

The fundraiser comes one month after NRA magazine America's 1st Freedom attacked Williams and Ramsey for their stance on the city's gun laws.

Andrew Arulanandam, NRA director of public affairs, said his organization has a long history of fundraising with NFL teams and would like to see that continue in Washington.

Arulanandam, who had not seen the letter, said the NRA "pioneered" gun-safety laws, adding that the organization trains children, adults, law enforcement officers and the military on how to properly handle weapons.

Redskins officials did not return several calls seeking comment.

Fundraiser questioned

- Fundraiser to be held at Prince George's County Trap & Skeet Center on Oct. 25

- Current and former Redskins players and coaches scheduled to attend

- District's gun laws considered among strictest in nation

I've always loved the 'skins, but now I'm going to cheer just a little harder. :D

If the 'skins don't back down, they will be my new favorite team, especially since the Vikings keep shooting themselves in the...uhhh..foot? :uhoh:

Wow. Football (at least the Redskins) just went up a notch in my book. Here I was thinking that NASCAR was the only sport left promoting shooting sports.

waitaminutewaitaminutewaitaminute....

The VPC is ragging on a football team for promoting violence?

Do those folks know what the Redskins do for a living?

"Do those folks know what the Redskins do for a living?"

Yup, they use mediocre football as an excuse to sell $7 beer and $6 hotdogs. And $80 for lower level seats on the corner of the endzone. Parking pass is another $20. :)

I hate the deadskins, but one thing about them always impressed me; their ability to tell the PC crowd to go fly a kite. If they stick with it this time, I might just cheer for them, or buy a hat.

Mike

And here's VPC's letter

October 10, 2005

Daniel M. Snyder
Owner
Washington Redskins
Redskins Park
21300 Redskin Park Drive
Ashburn, VA 20147

Dear Mr. Snyder:

It is my understanding that, according to the Washington Redskins web page, the “Redskins will host the inaugural Redskins Sporting Clays Challenge, presented by NRA [National Rifle Association] Sports, on Tuesday, Oct. 25, with the proceeds benefiting the team's Charitable Foundation” and that the event “will feature current and former Redskins players and coaches, placed with teams of four competitors for a day of sporting clays.”

As a Washington, D.C.-based national non-profit organization working to stop gun death and injury, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) strongly urges you to reconsider the Redskins’ hosting of, and participation in, this event. The National Rifle Association is currently lobbying the U.S. Congress to overturn Washington, D.C.’s landmark gun laws. The bills to repeal the District of Columbia’s gun laws promoted by the NRA would: legalize handguns as well as semiautomatic assault weapons and 50 caliber sniper rifles; allow any person to carry, openly or concealed, loaded handguns and other concealable firearms in houses, places of business, or other land “possessed by that person”; and, severely weaken the District’s ban on armor-piercing handgun
ammunition. At the same time, it stands as an outrageous attack by an outside special interest group on the home rule rights of D.C. residents.

This radical legislation endangers the safety of District of Columbia residents, commuters, tourists, public officials, and the law enforcement professionals sworn to protect our nation’s capital. The legislation is vigorously opposed by Mayor Anthony Williams, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Charles Ramsey, and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton. On June 28, 2005, Mayor Williams and Chief Ramsey appeared before a congressional committee to express their united opposition to the NRA-backed legislation. Chief Ramsey’s testimony included the following statement:

“What impact would the repeal of D.C.'s gun laws have on our city? From my perspective, the answer to that question is straightforward—and it is scary. Repealing our guns laws would mean substantially more handguns in the District of Columbia. And more handguns would mean more gun crimes, more gun violence and more homicides, as well as more accidental shootings and suicides. More guns will also mean a greater threat to our police officers.”

Yet the NRA’s response to the views of our city’s leaders is to attack and mock. As just one example, the cover of the September 2005 issue of the National Rifle Association’s America’s 1st Freedom magazine features “Washington’s Newest Monument,” an imagined “monument” consisting of a giant tombstone marked “Washington, D.C., America’s Murder Capital.” The tombstone is covered with skulls and faces of the dead. Inside, a two-page photograph of Mayor Anthony Williams holding up his hands while making a point has the headline and caption, “D.C. to Criminals: We Surrender! The mayor of Washington, D.C., the Murder Capital of the U.S. for 14 of the last 15 years, strikes a telling pose as he defends D.C.’s absurd gun laws.” The article then goes on to attack Mayor Williams and Chief Ramsey. I have included a copy of the cover and article for your review.

The NRA works to portray its lobbying efforts to repeal D.C.’s gun laws as a manifestation of its concerns for District residents. Unfortunately, statements by current board members belie these claims. For example, board member Jeff Cooper, in his Guns & Ammo column “Cooper's Corner,” in April 1991 wrote this regarding the murder rate in Los Angeles:

“the consensus is that no more than five to ten people in a hundred who die by gunfire in Los Angeles are any loss to society. These people fight small wars amongst themselves. It would seem a valid social service to keep them well-supplied with ammunition.”

The NRA also ignores the fact that Washington, D.C.’s strict gun laws work. In 2000, only three percent of crime guns recovered in the District came from D.C. gun dealers. In contrast, 59 percent of traceable D.C. crime guns were first purchased in Virginia and Maryland. Another 18 percent of D.C. crime guns were bought from gun dealers in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. The District is, in essence, being held hostage by the weak gun laws of other jurisdictions. Meanwhile, the District’s gun laws have been extremely effective in protecting D.C. youth from the scourge of youth suicide. According to research conducted by my organization, no child in the District of Columbia age 16 and under was the victim of a firearm suicide for the years 2000 through 2002 (and there were no suicides by other means during this time period). Meanwhile, Alaska, Montana, and Wyoming—the three states with the nation’s highest rates of gun ownership combined with some of the weakest gun laws in the country—led the nation in the rate of youth firearms suicide in the 16 and under age group.

The mission statement of the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation declares that the foundation works to “make a positive and measurable impact on youth in the greater Washington, D.C. region in the areas of literacy, youth development, education, community service, health and wellness.” As you know, District youth have paid a disproportionately high price in death and injury due to gun homicide. I know, as a Redskins fan and having attended Redskins games, that the team has publicly honored the memory of District youth whose promising lives have been cut short by gun violence. Recognizing that gun violence is one of the single most prevalent, and preventable, factors that can affect the “health and wellness” of youth in the Washington, D.C., area, I urge the Washington Redskins to end all participation in this event. The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation’s involvement with an organization whose mission is to repeal Washington D.C.’s gun laws cannot be reconciled with the mission of the foundation.

If you would like to discuss further the issues raised in this letter, I can be reached at 202-822-8200 x101.

Thank you, in advance, for your time and attention.

Sincerely,
Josh Sugarmann
Executive Director

Hate to say it, but the Redskins may become a favorite (not football team though) because of ---

Their NON PC Name

and if they tell Sugarmann and VPC to "sack" themselves... :D

Many NFL players shoot and hunt and own game ranches.

The franchises themselves are another story.
Each team needs to be checked out on a case by case basis for support of the shooting sports and NRA support.

While there are also sponsers in NASCAR that are gun makers and or support the shooting industry, each team needs to be checked for their own policies.

Don't forget Rick Hendrick AKA Hendrick motorsports, AKA Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson, Brian Vickers, Kyle Bush, gave 500k to the Clinton library to get a presidential pardon for his felony conviction even though he is supposed to be a Republican.

it stands as an outrageous attack by an outside special interest group on the home rule rights

Roflmywaffles

Ill send em an email sencouraging them to keep it up.

I sent this-
Ide like to send my support and encouragement about your participation in the NRA clay-shooting charity. Its always good to see the encouragement of both charitys and support of the Second Amendment rights.

I'm really confused about those statements. How would a CHP holder endanger the general populace? Do they think in a defensive situation a bullet may not hit the intended target and graze someone else?

I agree feedthehogs, that everyone needs to be checked out. It is dumb to generalize everything, and just go blindly on it that every case will be that way.

And I am certainly no Hendricks fan.

Come to think about it, my guy's owner is the Redskins coach.

My email to the Redskins community outreach:

"I'm glad to see the Redskins are sponsoring a charitable event and promoting safe, responsible, and fun shooting. I wish all of the teammembers and other participants happy shooting and a good time for all! Please ignore the garbage campaign that the Violence Policy Center is waging against the Redskins and continue to let this shoot raise money for the health and welfare of our youth."

Redskins are the greatest team ever, period. Why? One name: John Riggins. Running back, Superbowl MVP, NRA poster boy, general bad ass.
At the 39th annual Washington Press Club "Salute to Congress" Dinner in 1985, Washington Redskins running back John Riggins was seated at a table with Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. As usual, he had not missed attitude adjustment hour. Sometime before he passed out under the table, he managed to respond to what he considered boring dinner conversation by giving some advice to Mrs. Justice O'C. "Lighten up, Sandy baby," he said.
For that, the NRA punted him from the posters. :D
