I just bought a VR 80 shotgun and was wondering what ammo runs the best in them. I heard AA 1 1/8 oz. 1300 fps works but can not fins any. Please advise.

There are two gas rings that came with it, with the light ring mine will run even Walmart Federal bulk target loads.
One issue that kept mine from running was the buffer tube. It was screwed so far in that the bolt couldn’t move back far enough to chamber another round, yet my meat hooks were heavy handed enough to get the first one racked. After disassembly and investigation I noticed a battering of the buffer and an extraordinarily loose buffer tube.
I reassembled the thing properly and found much enjoyment.

I was used to over/unders, that’s what we hunt with. When I brought this along, just for fun, I found it much louder than the two-shot-ers. The gas port and chamber cycling report is much worse than a closed shotgun.

I think you’ll like it. For all the rabbits I down I couldn’t hit a pigeon to save my life, I got fourteen one night at the trap shoot, my personal best, with th e VR-80. I turned the gas off and hand ejected them like the fancy guys.
Like myself, I think everyone else was impressed too!;)

Interesting, I have never been great at busting clays, but when I pulled this one out, I was better at it than I was with my 870. My teen boys were doing it ok too.

I read somewhere that for break-in you want a few hundred rounds of high-brass, high-velocity (1300 fps or better). I couldn't find any, and I wasn't patient enough to order online. I tried some cheap stuff and I sampled some federal buckshot, and I had a few failures tto feed. But I found several boxes of AA 1300 fps at Sportsman's and shot them, no malfunctions. (BTW, it isn't high-brass either.)
