VZ-2008 CAI build. (Good purchase or not?)

I normally see these for $499 and up. I have looked and looked on line and see many good reviews and comments about this rifle. "One of Century's best efforts", etc. Supposedly contracted out and built by someone other than CAI.

In today's market, when every offering is getting more and more expensive...J & G is offering this rifle for $399, mags for $10.

I am in the market for a 7.62X39. Thought that I would wait till after the election and see if prices calmed down a bit. For $399 + $20 S/H + $10 ffl, these seem hard to beat.

What is your opinion about this rifle? Seems to me that for this price, it would be kinda hard not to make your money back (break even) in the future if you decided to sell.

I will wait for your feedback before deciding to purchase. I know, if the deal seems too good...it probably is.

$429 otd appears really hard to beat, milled reciever and such, (that is, unless you encounter a bunch of problems, also, do not know if the barrel is CL)

Look forward to your comments,

Gunner

well they certainly are not built to same specs that the cz and D-techniks are built to but for half the price i think its a good buy.

id wait for some with more expeirence with the platform to chime in but that is a good price

As a D-technik (CZ)Vz58 owner I can say the platform is awesome, it shoots dead on and just works. It is built very solid, I'm sure the rifle will out last me.
Like JHenry said the CAIs are not built to the same standards so you can expect little annoyances that go with a "cheaper" gun and maybe some bigger issues, its all a roll of the dice.... Chances are a new Vz2008 will be a decent shooter and do fine as a range plinker.
Resale on the Vz2008 is another roll of the dice....all depends on market conditions when your ready to sell.

I will let you know Wednesday when UPS stops by at my FFL. :D Darn holiday weekend!

I was tempted on picking that up too, but had to exercise some self restraint. :)

For $399 it's worth it even if it some tweaks.

I have 2 and the d-technik guys here knocking the CAI are full of it. True the VZ2008 are not built to the same specs, they don't have any plastic parts. They are both milsurp parts guns. The biggest differences are the d-tech guns have an AFTERMARKET czech receiver and the original chrome line barrel with a welded on brake to get it up to legal length, plastic trigger and mag parts to get it 922 compliant. You can't use milsurp mags and still be legal. The VZ2008 has a U.S. receiver and legal length U.S. non chrome lined barrel and is 922 complaint. The quality of the us receiver and barrel is very good and so is the construction.

I really like my cheap (360 each) and inferior CAI rifles.

As an owner of a Czechpoint VZ I have to recommend the platform. I have the folder and it's compact, fairly light but more importantly it's balanced well. It doesn't feel like an AK(front heavy).

Now onto the Century dilemma. Like all Century products I've heard success stories and failures with their VZ. That said from what I've gathered their VZ seems to be a more solid effort than the WASR. For $429 OTD I don't think you can find a better deal. I say go for it.

rocinante, relax bro...sheesh. not again about d-technik vs vz2008, this has been discussed before. purchased a vz2008 one of the first batches produced by cia w/wooden stock set and on sale back then for like $350 ish. for $399 its a good price if, you want a version of the vz58 using a U.S receiver U.S sorry barrel, built on a parts kit, and not have to worry about resale value....then this rifle is for you. did not hesitate to sell mine for a profit.

Thanks for the feedback. For the most part, I'd say you guys have had a fairly positive experience.

I don't HAVE to have one of these, and I know my wife will bitch and complain (I'm sure you guys have heard it too). It just seems that for the $$ spent, its a decent buy.

The CAI thing does bother me though. Does anyone know who actually builds these rifles? CAI or do they contract the work out?

I have 2 of the CAI VZ2008s. They are great rifles and I have no complaints.

The VZ is smaller and slimmer and lighter than the AK, so it takes a little getting used to. But excellent rifles.

BOTH are parts kit guns. The d-technik receiver is Czech made but not by CZ. Everything else except the plastic U.S. parts are original milsurp. The CAI has a u.s receiver and barrel, everything else is milsurp.

Green Mountain makes the U.S sorry barrel. They have such a reputation for producing "sorry" barrels. Plus it is threaded.

You say worry about resale value but you flipped your for a profit and CAI is now selling them for 500?

Okiegunner this is hearsay but I traded with a man here in Georgia. He said the AR I got from him had been worked over by a smith in North Georgia and the smith did the assembly and parking of the CAI VZ2008.

Folks who own the VZ2008 overwhelming seem to like them and folks that own d-technik overwhelmingly seem to resent them. Go figure.

close to owning a real vz58 in this country is the d-technik....vz2008 not so much....you choose
as much as i told my friend with a little more $$ he could get a better vz58(d-technik) he still wanted the 2008:confused:, so i sold it...but by now with him doin research is probably kickin himself in the rear.
as for the "sorry barrel" that my 2008 came with...well it is, the lands and grooves is so rough and worn lookin looks like it went through 10k+rounds of corrosive ammo. can anybody confirm if the new 2008s have better barrels? and if they are still .308. true vz58 barrels are .311-.312 and so are the d-technik, and just a heads up we shoot mostly .312 russian ammo, so if the barrels on the 2008 are still .308 your barrels might just wear out quicker than the d-technik...can you say keyholing:eek: jgsales sells them for $500?....nope, they sell right now for $399. hell i might just get another one, just for the sakes of beating the crap out of it, you know throw in the mud, run it over w/truck etc.. and see if it still runs that kinda stuff:cool:.

CAI does not plug their barrels when they're parked, after a few hundred rounds they shine up nice.

Been running my VZ2008 for over a year now with no issues. I wish they were $500 here in CT, I'd buy another.

If it's the Freedom Shoppe you're thinking of Turtle, I've never been able to find it.

I bought mine at BMG in Newington, got an okay deal after some wheeling and dealing. Gas prices and my ageing truck have just put a curb on my ability to shop around. Pretty much limited these days to the shop down the road from where I work in Norwalk. Which is okay by me.. they are good people.

I bought one from J&G.
Fit and finish is as good as any, bore is bright and no pits.
Got 3 extra mags for $10 each.
Shoots accurate and reliable. NOT one malfunction in 300 shots fired.
Only downside is that the forearm gets hot quick.
I am happy with this and would advise someone looking for a accurate, reliable and lightwieght rifle to get one.
Just my $.02.

The thread twisted my arm ... called J&G to buy one earlier this afternoon.

J&G then untwisted my arm - the discount ended, and its back up to regular price. FWIW, They were a bit snippy about it on the phone. That killed it for me - not the price, but the attitude.

Oh well, back into the piggy bank for the next impulse buy...

^This. I called them this morning after the price changed and I was pretty sure they wouldn't give me the sale price but they didn't have to be so snippy about it.

Drug my feet too. Story of my life. An hour late and a dollar short.

I just could not quite convince myself to pull the trigger. (no pun intended)

I do appreciate everyone's comments and posts.

Picked mine up today and ran out to the range. Overall I am pleased. If I had any complaints it was the top handguard looked like it had been replaced and the metal hardware was mangled underneath. It made the handguard loose, but I was able to fix it and it seems fine now.

I only fired 40 rounds, but function was great. The trigger is nice and smooth, though long with a long reset. I need to spend some more time with some tools for the sights to get it dialed in. I may look at Czechpoint's muzzle brake for it to replace the slant brake, but I like the rest the way it is. The wood impregnated plastic is unique and feels good.

I like the design of the VZ and Century didn't mangle it. I would consider getting one from Czechpoint later if I ever wanted more than a commie fun gun.
