Vz-58

I saw two of those the other day the phenolic furniture and the synthetic furniture version. The phenolic looked like resin and sawdust. The guns looked pretty good I'm just leery of the aluminum magazines. They are similar to AK mags except they have a special channel for the bolt hold open to ride in. Construction looked good except for they are made of aluminum and won't hold up as nicely as a steel AK mag. I probably would have bought one but the Mags bothered me to much. I wish they would come out with a steel version of the same mag.

The russians issued aluminum AK mags also. They didn't hold up any where near as well as the steel ones.
The aluminum VZ58 mags are well made, but an aluminum mag is easier to damage in any number of ways. They get cracks that start around the locking lugs from applying to much force and are dented much more easliy from getting stepped on. Aluminum mags will work just fine, but can't handle some of the more severe abuse steel ones can. If you take really good care of them you probably won't ever break them. When you start to abuse aluminum mags they will fail sooner. What I am getting at is that aluminum mags have shorter service lives than an equivalent steel one under the same stress.

That's exactly what it is. Some people think it's ugly, but I kind of like it, and it is a distinct and unique feature of the vz 58 -- I don't think the Czechs or anyone else used the stuff on anything else (and replaced it on their .mil 58s eventually as well).

The vz.58 magazines aren't just AK mags with a a bolt hold open channel added on. I don't think they're dimensionally similar enough to allow for dremel modification, but it might be feasible.

couldn't you use steel AK mags and dremel away the metal needed to make the bolt hold open functional?
The dimensions are nowhere near the same, nor is the design.

If aluminum mags were really a problem, everyone would have sold off their ARs by now. :) I have some AR mags and some VZ58 mags (planning on getting a 58 soon), and I'd trust the VZ mags to stand up to abuse much better than the AR mags.

I never said they didn't work, just they are much easier to break.
I have aluminum AR mags and can clearly see plastic and steel AR mags are less prone to denting. Aluminum works fine you just have to take better care of them.

I don't know what you fellas do with your rifles, but how would you break a magazine? My experience is, I'll grant you, somewhat limited, but I take my rifles to the range either in a case or a hard case. The magazines are in padded pouches. When the command to commence fire is given, I gently rock a magazine into place, charge the weapon, and fire. When empty, the magazine is removed from the rifle and replaced in the padded pouch.

I've shot 3 gun, not very well I'll grant you, and that is the only place where the magazines hit the ground, empty. I've not seen a magazine break in this manner.

I'm not sure what precisely the guy who asked the question meant, but his use of the word "modern" leads me to think he wasn't interested in the original Czechoslovakian folding stock.

Regardless, the folding stock is definitely the weakest aspect of the vz.58 design as far as I can tell -- narrow enough that it makes 7.62x39 feel like it has some real recoil to it, no cheek weld to speak of, etc. It is quite servicable for a handy carbine but the vz.58 would really benefit from some sort of improved design more along the lines of the FAL/Galil folder or the better Russian side folders, etc.

vz58.net has some AR stock adapters on order, just waiting for the boat to come in, he said on the phone that it would be a few weeks, i called march 20th, 08.

I agree though, the VZ looks better with a 6 pos AR stock. I am keeping my wood furniture, just for collector purposes but since i plan on fireing my weapon, i am getting some better gear for it.

I like it so far, i just wish i had a local source for non metal jacket ammunition. I can't fire the metal jackets in the indoor range by my place. I'm pretty much limited to go outdoors until i find some non metals.
