GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Two Wal-Mart employees collecting shopping carts were shot to death Tuesday afternoon in a Wal-Mart parking lot, authorities said. No shots were fired in the store and no one inside was injured.

"This is an extremely tragic situation. It has been confirmed that we have lost two of our associates," said Sharon Weber from Wal-Mart's headquarters in Bentonville, Ark.

Police had initially said there had been a third victim who had been wounded but police spokesman Mike Pena later said that wasn't the case.

No suspects were in custody, Pena said. He wouldn't elaborate beyond that.

The shooting occurred in the middle of the parking lot about 75 yards from the store entrance. Officers had moved patrol cars around the shooting scene Tuesday afternoon and cordoned the area off with police tape.

A body could be seen in one of the corrals used for collecting shopping carts.

Pena said there were several witnesses to the shootings but wouldn't say who they were.

Delia Garcia, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman on the scene, said employees were being sent home late Tuesday afternoon. Garcia said the company was bringing in counselors and victims assistance workers.

The store has about 450 employees.

"It's really tragic," said Garcia.

She said the store would be closed at least until Wednesday.

Glendale is about eight miles northwest of downtown Phoenix.

(CBS 5 NEWS) - Two people have been fatally shot at a Wal-Mart at 83rd Avenue and Union Hills in Glendale. Both were Wal-Mart employees.

Unconfirmed reports from witnesses say the shooter or shooters reportedly drove away in a 1999 Toyota Camry, AZ plate 302-RH(?).

Every vehicle within the crime tape must stay as it is considered part of the investigation. Those drivers and passengers will be provided with rides home.

More information will be provided as soon as it is available.

Two Wal-Mart employees were shot to death this afternoon at a Wal-Mart parking lot in Glendale.

No shots were fired in the store and no one inside was injured.

Police confirmed there were two dead, and a Wal-Mart spokeswoman at the company's headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., said they were company employees.

The shooting occurred in the middle of the parking lot and about 75 yards from the store entrance. Police moved patrol cars around the shooting scene and cordoned the area off with police tape.

Police spokesman Mike Pena said no suspects were in custody but he wouldn't elaborate beyond that.

A Wal-Mart spokeswoman at the scene said she didn't know whether the dead employees were working at the time of the shooting.

Spokeswoman Delia Garcia said the store is being closed indefinitely and that Wal-Mart is working to get help for employees upset by the shootings. The store has about 450 employees.

Police had initially said there had been a third victim who had been wounded but Pena later said that wasn't the case.
