As we all know, the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal is a source of anti-police liberal media bias. And I wasn't there, so I don't have the right to have an opinion about this, the deputy's right to be innocent until proven guilty is being violated, blah blah blah.

Zero-Tolerance Watch

"An 11-year-old sixth-grade girl was arrested Friday afternoon at Fox Chapel Middle School on a charge of possessing a weapon," the St. Petersburg Times reports from Spring Hill, Fla.

The "weapon" was a butter knife:

The girl, who won't turn 12 until March and whose name is being withheld by the Times because she is a minor, was handcuffed, taken to the Hernando County Jail and charged with the possession of a weapon on school property, a third-degree felony. . . .

This started not because of the butter knife, according to the arrest report, but because of a small, clear-plastic vial with a purple lid that was in the girl's book bag. The vial contained a white powder. The girl told school administrators that it was "glitter"--her makeup.

She did tell the sheriff's deputy and the administrators that she had shown the vial to a friend and said, "Look at this," but that she was "just kidding."

The substance in the vial, the deputy wrote in the arrest report, tested negative for cocaine, and was sent to a Florida Department of Law Enforcement lab to "confirm its identity."

When administrators asked the girl to dump out the contents of her bag, though, out came the knife--wrapped, the arrest report says, in a Sonny's Bar-B-Q napkin with tape around it.

Says Deputy Donna Black of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office: "For bringing weapons onto school property, there is zero tolerance. It's been that way for years. And this is not just here. That's nationwide." (Hat tip: ZeroIntelligence.net.)

If it's "nationwide," we wonder how Deputy Black would explain this headline in the Tucson Citizen: "Another Shot at the AIMS Test." Arresting kids for possessing butter knives is ridiculous, but would it be too much to ban guns during the administration of standardized tests?

This angers me. Greatly. Very greatly.

If i wasnt a reasonable person, i would go kill the people responsible for this foolishness.

And know what? I could.

Why?

Because if i want to bring a weapon to any public or private place to kill someone i can!

These laws are not going to stop people from bringing weapons to school if they really wanna kill someone! What about the kid who killed 8 people this summer? He didnt pay attention to "No tolerance"

I have no tolerance for the ignorant fools, who install such...bleh....

Can Hernando County Deputy Sheriff, Donna Black cite any instances where a butter knife (which has a blunt point and is not sharpened) has been used in a school to inflict injury? And while she's at it, don't the students get silverware to eat with at lunch time?

Brain-dead is too kind a description for this person ... :cuss: :banghead:

If a butterknife is a weapon, why isn't a pencil?

What about paperclips launched from rubber bands? I've got horrible scars to prove how deadly those things are (as do the people who shot me! ;) )

Back when I was in all we had were Sporks, and related plastic ware.

I am aware of them using plastic - but I think a plastic butter knife would be about as effective a cutting or stabbing weapon a a metal one.

Suposedly there rules are supposed to be about "weapons" - actual, or improvised. The real issue here is how one defines what is or isn't a weapon. A kid's pet rock is a weapon if it is used as such. Otherwise it's a toy.

The people who run schools these days - and some law enforcement personel - have gone off of the deep end. So far as the schools are concerned it's usually a case of P.C./liberal culture and "sheepleism." I would expect better from the law enforcement sector.

Pencils ...

In Brevard County, here on the east coast, the school handbook does outlaw pencils, and classifies them as weapons! banghead:

The School Board never responded when I questioned this issue.

IF SCHOOLS WISH TO IMPOSE THIS ASSININE "ZERO TOLERANCE LAW" ON STUDENTS FOR WHAT THEY PERCEIVE AS WEAPONS, THEN I WANT A COMPANION LAW ENACTED FOR "ZERO TOLERANCE" FOR STUDENT'S EDUCATION; ANY STUDENT GRADUATE ADDING WRONG, NOT ABLE TO FORM A COHERENT SENTENCE, NOT ABLE TO UNDERSTAND BASIC HISTORY, SHOULD THUS HAVE LEGAL RIGHT TO SUE SCHOOLS FOR BREACH OF CONTRACT...ZERO TOLERANCE FOR IMPROPER EDUCATION....

Any student deemed not educated should be able to sue his or her school for fraud; starting with principal and ending with individual teachers... zero tolerance for improper education.... the entire public school population can sign on the class action suit that will be formed....

zero tolerance....:(

The dumbest people (as a group) I have had the displeasure of dealing with have been school administrators. The old saw comes to mind: "those who can't do, teach; those who can't teach become school administrators".
Now I'll have to take a look at some sheriff deputies:barf: .

You didn't by chance work at a Sears store in Maryland did you?

Cslinger knows what I'm talking about.

It's insanity

I am aware of them using plastic - but I think a plastic butter knife would be about as effective a cutting or stabbing weapon a a metal one.

and a plastic utensil of any kind is much more dangerous than a metal butter knife, because it can easily and quickly be broken into a shard with a deadly sharp point.

This is so ridiculous. I'm afraid that I'll have to be homeschooling if I ever have critters if this nonsense doesn't turn the other direction.

"A" students teach . . . and "B" students end up working for "C" students!:D

Every day, I had to hear it from my dad: "I drive a beat up used car so I can afford to send YOU to a private school..."

Now I have two boys, and I'm already saying the SAME THING to them....

Liberal???

I hope whoever wrote the above was being facetious. I'd hate to think I'm holding occasional conversations with people so uninformed as to actually believe the Wall Street Journal's editorial page is "liberal." That's where Jude Wanowski, the guru of supply-side economics, used to work.

Hey spring hill, there is a surprise. FYI, the schools here suck.

I would love to make a difference, but I dont have any kids and I wouldnt raise them in Florida if I did. I dont know how such stupidity gets entrenched in the local school systems, but you have to remember that few people with Masters degrees are going to sign up for a stressful, 25k a year job. Few intelligent ones.

44 Special, that voice in the back of your head was the sarcasm detector going off.

Pencils...

Actually, when I was in the 6th grade, I was attacked in the school bathroom by a big 8th grader. After beating me like a rented drum for awhile, he got me in a headlock. Panicked, I pulled my pencil from my pocket and thrust out blindly. Got 'im right in the twins. I can still hear the scream...
Biker:evil:
