It's been a while since i needed to buy a couple bricks of .22 LR. I feed 'em like candy through my ruger 10/22 (which i also bought at wal-mart) and when i went to the sporting good store the employee said they changed their policy and now you have to be 21 years old to buy .22 LR because it is closley affiliated with handguns!

Is this a new thing and have i just been living under a rock? Is it just the anal owner of my local wal-mart or is this national? I tried explaining to the guy that he is more than willing to sell me my rifle, but when it comes to actually obtaining bullets they won't sell them!

Just wondered if this was new information :/

Just another example of Wally World customer service.

It's just this particular dunderheaded employee. Tell 'em it's for a rifle, and the sale should pass through.

he WAS an older guy and i explained to them that this particular establishment sold me the weapon i needed it for. but he just wouldn't sell it to me. Luckily my brother was wiht me who is 21+ and be bought it for me :D

I bought .22lr two days ago, a 500 rd brick. I wasn't asked and this is MA.

For the 30-06, however, he asked... but as a joke. :neener:

Maybe it's because of my rifle/shotgun only license that he didn't need to ask? I've bought 9mm and 45acp for carbines I don't have yet. Pity that they were used at the range in my neighbor's pistols. :D

I know someone under 21 can't buy handgun ammo. But if a person 18 to 20 has a rifle chambered for a handgun cartiage, can he legally buy ammo for it?

Why doesn't everbody pick a day to call Home office in Ar and bitch about the lack of knowledge of their help and the changing policy. Also aboult walking you to door so you can load in parking lot and come back in. I tired of no one ever in sporting dept at my wal mart.

Absolutely. That law is just an asinine attempt to make people "feel" better. (And it still would be even if it weren't rediculously easy to get around.)

my walmart never asks if im 18 when i buy ammo.

i had a cahsher pause for a second, but tthen she just looked at me and said "You look like your 18" with a confident tone ane bagged it up.

i dont expect the walmart employees to know SQUAT. i once asked if they had any of such and such a caliber and i had to wait 15 minets for the employee to find the manager

One time i got an older gentleman who actualy knew his stuff though. i was quite surprised.

Not here in the PR of Illinois....the only thing that happens when they ring up ammo is an obnoxious beeping tone telling them to check FOID card...on every box too.....no age, no what is it used for etc....Heck it's still cheaper there than most places round here.......mack....

Yes. And most people don't even ask.

So what does someone under 21 have to do? bring the rifle in and show it to the dealer? Or just tell him he has a rifle in a handgun cartiage?

I'm 30 now, but I've been wondering about this since my teens...

I turned 21 earlier this month, and I ran into this problem many times trying to feed my Super Blackhawk. Walmart wouldn't let my buy, nor would any of the area gun stores. Then I figured out something. I was trying to pay with a debit card. I took in cash to a gun store, and was not asked if I was over 21. I got the same cashier too, so I KNOW they knew I was under 21. Now I've all but given up the debit card, cash is just easier, and I know my bank doens't know what I'm up to all the time :)

I live in CT. Recently, my local Wally-World has adopted a new ammo policy. When you buy ammo, you have to remove it from the store immediately. Store manager doesn't people to be walking around with ammo in case they get the urge to lock 'n load & spray 'n pray in aisle 5. :D

How is someone is suppose to do this if he doesn't have the gun to put the ammo in?

I do almost everything online for ammo. The only reason why I even go to Walmart is to buy one thing I can't find anywhere else, cetane.

Silly application of policy

When you buy ammo at the local Walmart, the employees often ask, "Is it for a handgun." If you say "yes," they will ask for ID and proof of age. If you say "no," then they take your money and you leave happy.
A friend of mine (under 21) would buy 40 cal ammo. He would tell them it was for a rifle and they would sell it. I have noticed that they ask me the same question on my 9mm. As if it matters! If you have a Berretta Storm then you can buy all you want. But if you have a Berretta 92, then you had better bring ID....for the same bullets.

My local Wally World doesn't pull any of that. Last time I bought .22LRs from 'em, they didn't ID me or ask what type of gun it's for. Not that it matters since I'm 22, but still. I've never been walked out of the store. And even the few clerks that have no clue what I'm asking for will let me point it out for them. The only problems I've ever had at Wal-Mart are finding a clerk in sporting goods, or when I was 17, they wouldn't let me buy super-glue. Figure that...

i went to Academy (sporting goods store that competes with WalMart in TX for sporting goods) and asked them how many boxes of 9mm they had. i pushed an empty shopping cart to the hunting dept.

the 19 year old kid behind the counter sneered, "I got 24, why?" I told him I wanted them all and to pass it over the counter so I could load up my cart.

He looked at me and said, "Is this for handguns?"

I replied, "No, its for machine guns." :D He just about pooped. :what:

I have a real simple solution which for some reason is lost on most folks here.

STOP SHOPPING AT THAT STINKING HELL HOLE!

The problem with this is that for a lot of us Walmart is the only place to buy certain stuff. I also have gotten worse service at K-mart, and they have a lesser slection then Wal-mart.

If Walmart still sold handguns I wouldn't have went to a gunshop since the nearist one is 20 miles away.

-Bill

The nearest gunshop is practically down the road, I enjoy it a lot more than Wal-Mart so I'll likely be doing most of my gun-needs shopping done there.
