Have noticed that none of my local wal marts carry shotguns anymore. BB / Pellet guns and ammo and that is it.

Did they stop completely or am I just living in a growing anti area?

I'm shopping for a new gun and have been hitting the local gun shops. Must say that I'm not sure what is worst, big box store clerk knowing nothing about guns or a local shop guy that I am trying to biz with not knowing anything.

Each individual Wal Mart store that sells guns has to have its own FFL.

I'm pretty sure it's just a case of some stores not having an FFL yet, or deciding it's not worth the trouble to apply for and maintain one.

The Wal-mart to my east sells rifles and shotguns, and I recently bought a Savage Mark II there. They always have a selection of some long-barreled shotguns, and a few Remington and Savage rifles, and the cheap 'survival' and Plinkster .22's.

The Wally World to my west gets about a dozen total cheap muzzle-loaders in at the start of hunting season, and that's it.

Depends on the store. If they don't have an FFL, or just aren't in an area that they sell, they don't get the guns.

The Wake Forest, NC wal-mart sells firearms, but none of the Raleigh area stores sell them.

...

Ya, but there is a walmart within every 15 miles of me in So. NH without them. Not a huge deal but like to research prices and availability.

...

and these stores I'm referring to used to sell them. I remember seeing them years ago.

The WM here in Bloomington, IN sells ammo (when they have it) and maybe 4 or 5 muzzle loaders. Quite a few BB guns too.

My local Wal-mart use to sell firearms before they rearranged the store... I also noticed they did away with the fabric department.

I know of one other Wal-mart who still sells guns.

About 4 years ago, Walmart started to reduce the number of stores that sold guns. Supposedly this was on a store by store basis, determined by sales in the area. Around here, the older stores stopped carrying guns and the newer ones had expanded gun counters installed.

If you want to see the shotgun selection, check with sporting goods to see if one of the local stores has taken over gun sales for the area.

It's fun to think that there is a nationwide conspiracy against us, but probably not.

I think it has been happening more than 4 years, Jorg. In fact, adjusting department size has been an ongoing practice for a long time.

Each store is constantly evaluated for productivity on every dang square foot of floor area. If a certain department is lagging and other goods make more revenue per square foot, the next remodel takes care of that. There is no 'anti-gun' conspiracy when profitability is at stake.

If guns sell big at a particular location and make lots of money per square foot, be assured that they will find an FFL somewhere. Yep, you bet. These WalMart people know how to manage every square inch, the vacant position for an FFL won't go unfilled for long.

I live near Minneaoplis. I have not seen gun for sale in any of the WMs I have been too. Most of them only selld shot gn ammo now. I don't go to WM very much, there is other places I would rather shop. I have noticed when they remodel a store that's when the ammo selection goes away.

Can't speak for wally world, but I ran sporting goods depts for FW Woolworth years ago. While the store EO's had policies about which stores sold firearms and ammo, the local regional and district managers, did some of the stupidest things, either from a rules and regs view or liability view and then too the attitude that they could make more money selling liesure suits. Between being stuck with employees who would intentionally screw up and sell guns without paperwork, and leaving ammo out on shelves to be shop lifted, the system was doomed to failure. The real kicker was the new sporting good dept buyer. A woman from New York, whose prior asignment was purchasing pots and pans for the housewares dept. She came into one of my stores and started throwing out firearms log books, FFL forms, ordered the employees to put the guns out on the counters for display. Two stores lost their FFL licenses, one in rural Va, because the twit just wouldn't listen. I called the CEO's office to complain, and was told the markup isn't enought to justify the space, so sporting goods was going to be phased out. Heck the whole store phased out. Execs can run a business into the ground faster than a Democratic congress.

I was told buy an older WM employee that there are only a few hundred stores that sell guns. I have one about 20 minutes away that has about 15 shotguns/rifles on display

Take a chill pill.

Big 'Evil' Walmart still sells guns where I live. about 1/2 dozen kinds each of rimfire rifles, center fire rifles, and shotguns.

Depends on volume of sales. Both WalMarts in my hometown, one on the east end and and one on the west, sell guns and ammo. Hunting is big here so the sporting goods section is a profit center.
