I've sold Walthers and Sigs. Internet problems aside, I haven't had one brought back yet for any problems. The Walther is much smaller, and is cheaper. The main reason I sell a bunch of these guns is that they are easily adaptable for suppression, and I'm an NFA dealer. I would get either one that fit me better and be happy.

I didn't start this thread to go over a .22's SD capabilities. I just asked which one you recommended over the other.

Okay, I answered your original question. So now I'm going to be an internet jerk and address something you didn't ask for.

Don't do it. Don't carry a .22. Rimfire reliability sucks. Even premium ammunition has a high dud rate. (priming compound has blank spots in it)

I'm a CCW instructor, and I have people bring up using .22 all the time. So I've done as much research as humanly possible about it.

.22 sucks. Historically it sucks. Reliability sucks. Penetration sucks. The size wound it makes sucks. Wrap your brain around the fact that all handguns suck, but the .22 is the inbred cousin they keep locked in the celler.

Yes, rule number one of a gunfight is to have a gun. Good for you to carry, period. That will probably be enough. But if you have to shoot somebody, you are going to want to shoot them with the most effective thing that you can. And that just ain't a .22. You want to stop them right now, and .22 just doesn't do that with any sort of regularity.

Look, I understand where you're coming from. I started carrying as a young father in college too. I was broke. Totally broke. I carried the same two magazines of premium hollowpoints for my .45 for several years. I rotated them so that the top round wasn't always the one going into the chamber so I wouldn't break a crimp.

Get the .22 and practice with it. Carry your 9mm. You can stay decently proficient with the 9mm through a lot of (free) dedicated dry fire practice. Dry fire will keep you 90% of where you need to be. Then once every six months, scrape up $20, go to Walmart, and buy a box of Winchester whitebox. Otherwise, shoot your .22 every chance you get.

Sorry man, I know this isn't what you asked.

The problem is, I can't get a .22 without selling or trading my 9mm. So in essence, I'll be able to carry, but never be able to shoot. The only range within a close area (because of my time restraints I can't go to the public ranges a half hour away) costs 7.50 an hour. So to shoot 100 rounds of 9mm will cost me 21.50, a lot of money for someone who makes less than 800 a month.

That's a tough one. But I would hold on to the XD, and start collecting pennies until I could buy any .22. You'll probably be happier in the long run (not to mention a whole lot better off should you actually have to shoot somebody with it!)

Theres a lot to be said for dry fire and airsoft for practice. I have a couple of airsofts that will shoot pretty good groups target style across a good sized room. They also fit your holsters, at least mine do, so you can practice drawing and firing, right in the house. You can get a decent airsoft pistol for under $100. My one 1911 is a single shot(it has a mag, you just need to cock it after each shot) spring gun that I paid $30 for. It will shoot quarter sized groups at 25 feet.

I know what your talking about Sola.

I asked a similar Question a few days ago. i wanted a small 22 automatic for use as a BUG and for recreation, and everyone told me to get the large ruger pistols.

Neermind the fact that they didnt fit the bill, they were recomended anyway.

My Firestorm with Remington Vipers is very reliable. I dont carry it, BUT, I would not hesitate if it was all I had at my disposal. It will poke some very nasty holes in a BG

AK103K - I suppose the answer is yes and no.

The only other person who has shot it is my father, but I wouldn't rely on him as a real test because it was the first time he shot an autoloader, and the last time he ever shot a gun was 15 years ago with his revolver, and he never really learned properly how to shoot (I tried to teach him - but he started to get embarassed, so I backed off - I left my lesson off at firearm safety which is what I'm most concerned with, but I'm hoping I can get him to go to the range with me and bring his revolver because I want him to know how to use it properly for home defense - b/c I'm not around to be the house security guard if something happens - I live 50 miles away).

I'm taking my cousin and his girlfriend shooting in a week, and they probably won't count much either because it's their first time shooting a gun ever. But I'll use the P22 for teaching how to hold the gun, check the chamber, firearm safety (that will come first), etc.... and then just let them have fun because I doubt they care about accuracy.

I should let a range staff member give it a whirl and see how he does with it.

As for the sight, I've fiddled a bit with it, but there's not all that much it seems you can do with it.

I'm hard pressed to think it's me causing the problem though because I can shoot very accurately with any of my .40 cal pistols (I only own .40 cal pistols aside from the P22).

But I'll give it a try with somebody else and see what happens. Maybe I can order a replacement barrel and see if that fixes things. Or maybe I'll sell it and instead buy a Ruger.

your mind in gear sola?

What is that supposed to mean? I said I can't afford to buy a second gun. But I can trade my current gun in for a .22. Then I could practice a lot more, and still be able to carry. If I keep my 9mm., I won't be able to practice very often, so that will effect my accuracy drastically. Like I said, if I keep the 9, I'll be able to carry but rarely be able to shoot. With the .22, I'll be able to carry and shoot regularly.

Get the SIG, figure out which brand of .22 it likes as it will definitely like a brand or two over the others. It's a better CCW profile, somewhat more slender and sleek for carry. Sig stands behind their weapons and I believe the odds are that it'll be more reliable out of the box on than the P22. As I said, I have the P22 and If I was doing it all over again with your choice, I'd go SIG P22 without a doubt.

God Bless

I don't have a Sig, but I have the Walther, so I'll toss what I know to the wind for what it's worth. After 400 or more rounds through mine (mostly this past weekend) I've had 4 Fail to strips, 2 FTF, and one FTE (causing one strip fail). I have fired American Eagle mostly, but tossed a hundred Fed Champions through it cause I like them.
I use grease on the rails and Rem-oil everywhere else.
Above all, I like the gun. I wouldn't trust it to save my life (I've had some bad experiences with rim-fires) but armed is better than un-armed. I seem to recall a car-jacker being shot in the hind-end by a woman with a 22. Might not kill, but it'll sting for a long time.

Never shot the Sig, but I have a Walther P-22. I wouldn't trust it for concealed carry, as I regularly have failure to feeds at every range trip. Only 1 or 2 FTFs, though, in more than 500rds (when they fed). So, if you only need 1 shot...

I'd also skip the laser attachment for it. Mine doesn't seem to hold zero from range trip to range trip, so I just end up using the sights anyway.

If you haven't figured it out by the post's above... The Wather P-22 can be either a GREAT little gun or a LEMON... Just a matter of luck there.

I have one that only digests Remington .22 HP golden rounds ($8.99/525rds)
and I have tried EVERYTHING else short of ELEY TENEX. It's moderately accurate at 7 yds, never tried 25 with it....

Point being, it's a fun little pistol to shoot and I use it all the time when I train young shooters.

One question though..... How do you break a slide??????? :what:

Economist,

Your P22 should have come with a couple extra front sight blades of different heights so you can adjust for elevation. They swap out.

Thanks for the replies which answered my question. The on-target answers and the poll results have helped me make my choice. I sold my XD-9 to a friend of mine today for about $400. Tomorrow I go to purchase a P-22 and some ammo. I'll probably pick up the bi-tone and maybe some extra mags (if they are a good price). When I checked there the other day, it was about $330 for NIB. Despite the cries against CCW, I plan to conceal carry this gun, at least until my financials go upward.
