Hello everyone I am a new member on this forum and this place seems active

I have been thinking and looking for a Walther P5 for a while and saw some on the net for 430.00 two mags case and cleaning rod ( surplus from Germany) but dont like to buy blindly.

Ok so I went to a gun show today and some guy there was browsing the same table I was, told me that he saw a P5 at Cabelas and it was at the gun library and they put it for sale at 475.00, well guess what, I drove 1 1/2 hours to Cabellas and traded a P232 that I never really shot much

got 250.00 for the Sig, I know I lost good but walked out the door for 243.00 with the P5

Looks pretty good some blue is worn on the right side polished section above the Interarms name, just long thin streak of bare metal on or near the edge the rest is very good all the blue is there with very very tiny spot or two, no scratches just looks like holster wear, the rails look like no blue was rubbed off and the ramp only has two tiny spots of blue rubbed off where it feeds

the bore looks good, my question is how can I tell when it was made, is there a way to tell where it came from (private or police surplus or both) any thing I should look for in terms of ware there is about the same tolerance as my new P220 Sig in the slide to frame fit with the P5 being just slightly more loose, very slightly also the down side was only one mag no manual or case but I got to see what I was buying in person

I will post a range report later.

PS: this has the heel magazine release

Thanks that was helpful I would have never guessed, It says IB so I guess it's 1981?

I just got back from the range I love the trigger on this it's like custom work no creep what so ever crisp and clean, nice 1 1/2 in at 15 yards I have to get used to the gripp which is a little short for my hand the slide rings like a tuneing frork when you hit it with your finger I would like to have the slide refinished and get wood gipps fo it.

Three pistols came out of the German police trials: the Walther P5, the SIG P6 (P225), and the HK P7. The P5 was the best of the lot (but the P6 was the cheapest).

The P5 was the best of the lot

Many, incluidng myself, think the HK P7 was the best, not that the P5 isn't an excellent piece. In fact I like all three, but the P7 is really special.

Any of you guys know where I can get new springs for it, recoil springs main spring and magazienes, I figuer it's about 25 years old it might need new ones. any reccomendations? thanks in advance

Walther P5 pistols were never issued to the German Bundeswehr, (Army).
They were issued to the Landespolizei,(State Police), in the German states of Baden-Wurttemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate and to some local Police Forces.

The State Police, Border Guards, and German Army are in the process of converting to the H&K USP series of handguns although all will not use the same models. HTH

I have a Walther P-5, it is an excellent handgun though in todays world where 17 to 20 shot magazines are the rule instead of the exception, the pistol is somewhat outdated.

I hav a P-5 also. I've held it side by side with my CZ-75D PCR and its the same size. The PCR hold 14 + 1, the P-5 holds 8 + 1. I usually carry the PCR. However, I would not feel underarmed with a P-5, P-6 or P-7. If you can't defend yourself with 9 rounds, then, well you know. The P-5 is a well made, excellent and interesting pistol. It will serve the original poster well.

onmilo, or Pilot does your gun have some wigle in the slide to frame fit,? I am just curious if it's like that when new and the barrell to slide has a very very slight wiggle also should it be like that?

I bought my P-5 brand new and it was pretty tight.
Since then I have put about 2000 to 3000 rounds through it and it is getting looser.
Your gun was purchased used but don't to worry about the looseness, my pistol shoots better now than it did when it was new.
I guess everything settled in.

Thanks again to all of you, I am sending the upper to Earl for refinish and geting the wood grips for it, again I wouldn't say it's loose in the muzzel it just has a very very slight (less than one mm) play more so up and down than side to side

I really love the engeneering and design very different from all my other guns it functioned well with white box winchester 147gr jhp contrary to what I heard about JHP ftf, I had no failures, I only put about four magazines of HP and about 50 or so FMJ, after I get new recoil springs it will be put to the test.
