Walther P99c.... The subcompact the Internet forgot...

In my unending search for the perfect carry gun, I've ended up with two very good options. Thus far, I've yet to come across any really good comparisons.

I purchase my HK P30SK in June of this year. I ordered the V1 with the LEM trigger. When I went to pick it up, my FFL mistakenly got a V3 DA/SA. He was very apologetic and let me know that I could have the V1 in about two weeks. But due to the drive involved and my time constraints, I chose to take the V3.

The HK has a 3.27" barrel, 6.42" OAL and weighs 24oz. Mine came with glow in the dark sights and two magazines.

I took delivery of my P99c this week. I just bought a full-size P99 and love it, so I wanted to try the compact. It has a 3.5" barrel, 6.6" OAL, and weighs 21.5 oz. It has three dot sights and comes with two mags, one with extension, one without.

Shooting: The HK with all three small grip panels fits like a glove. I love the feel. I'm not impressed with the glow sights though. When holstered, what do your sights look like? Well, my rear is exposed (soaking up light), while my front is hidden (growing dim). Any shooting in low light has a dim front and strong rear...opposite of what it should be. The DA to SA is stark with a very long pull. SA reset is good. If this was my only gun, I could get used to it and love it.

The P99c is the AS version. It gives you the option of either decocking it or carrying with a 4.5-5 ish lb trigger. I prefer DA/SA for carry. The transition is much better than the HK and groups are smaller. The no -pinky extension mag is useless. Gives you a very uncomfortable grip on the gun. Worse than any other 2-finger grip. With the extension mag and large panel, this thing is awesome!

Carrying... They carry nearly the same, but I find the HK feels fatter and the hammer digs into my spare tire, but nothing I can't live with. The Walther feels lighter and thinner. The OAL is the same when lined up from end of the hammer to front compared to end to end. Walther has longer sight radius and adjustable sights.

Both guns have a phenomenal paddle mag release. Some people hate these, but find a person who has gotten used to it and they will likely tell you how much they love them. I won't go back to the button (except for the 1911).

In summary to my very unscientific and choppy review.... Both will serve you well. Both shoot to point of aim, both 100% reliable, both 10-rnd capacity, both carry well. If I were to do the HK over, I'd get the V1 LE with the night sights and three magazines. In the end, I love this new P99c AS. Take a look at them! Mine was $519 from Bud's.

I have 2 P99as in full size that I love, but no compact, I have not seen one locally. That said I have been looking at the HK P30sk lately I have shot the full sized and liked it. The only thing that has held me back is the price and availability of HK mags.

I have never been fond of the compact P99 models. Love the full sized ones and plan to own many more. But the grips of the compact versions seem too wide and awkward compared to their short grip. If going compact Watlher, I would much rather have a PPS with a few less rounds compared to a P99c.

When I went shopping for my first handgun years ago I did try a HK P2000K. The older brother to the P30SK. Trigger was very smooth and I liked it. But the price tag was a huge turn off at the time.
