My wife wants a walther pps for ccw. I've heard that if the back/strap breaks the gun will not fire/ is this true?

Yes , but I would put a grip sleeve on it anyway , so that would not keep me from buying one .

My wife has a PPS. You can remove the backstrap by sliding it down a bit until it disengages. This causes the striker to de-cock. There are two reasons (in theory) for this feature.

You can release the striker without having to pull the trigger. It's less trouble, of course, to clear the gun and then pull the trigger to drop the striker.

Also, since the gun is rendered inoperative with the backstrap removed, you could leave the gun loaded and carry the backstrap around with you.

The backstrap is made of polymer. If you attach and detach it repeatedly, would it wear out? Possibly causing it to come loose at the wrong time? I dunno. Hers is pretty secure so far.

If you otherwise like the PPS I wouldn't let this put me off.

I've owned a PPS for a few years now. I figured out which backstrap fit my hand best, installed it on the gun and left it there. Walther markets the removable backstrap as a safety feature, but it never seemed that useful to me.

I had many problems (FTF, FTE) with my pps and had to return it twice to Smith And Wesson who do the warranty work for Walther. Mine is 40S&W and the 9mm may be better or I may have had a lemon. It was eventually fixed I think but I never have trusted it again and it sits in the safe unused and unloved. The backstrap was not a concern though. I fitted a rubber grip sleeve and it made the gun much better to shoot. The whole experience kind of sucked and I swore off Walther and it has taken me quite a few years to forgive S&W as well for their slow and uncommunicative warranty service.

Well, she's going to try an emp next week- otherwise she will buy the walther pps 40cal.
If she does I guess I'll get a grip sleeve. I'm concerned about it failing but maybe I'm over analyzing it. Thanks for the rrplies

I love my PPS. Have also owned an EMP....the PPS is better for the money spent.

Does she have strong hands? If not, go with the 9 and not the 40.

Took a class at Front Sight a couple of weeks ago. A robust looking young woman was shooting a Shield in .40 that her boyfriend had bought her. Her hands started to hurt after awhile from the recoil and she started to flinch badly. She was in tears of frustration at one point during the class.

I have owned two different .40s and ended up hating them both. I work with my hands but dang it those guns became downright unpleasant after 100 rds or so. Not so my 9s or .45s.

Anyway, just food for thought. Good luck with whatever you end up with.

I wouldn't concern yourself with it. It's like saying "if that hammer falls off, the gun won't shoot". I really liked the PPS. I'd choose it over Shield/XDs/G26 every time.

Go with 9mm. The .40 was not comfortable for me when I tested it.

I have a PPS in 9mm. Perfect CCW gun. Thin, light & reliable carried in a Alessi Talon. Worrying about a backstrap malfunction is a non-issue in my mind. I guess my only complaint would be the smaller mag capacity compared to something like a G19. I accept less rounds for easier carry. I have several 1911's and Glocks but the PPS gets to ride along most of the time.

The PPS is an outstanding gun, but it's definitely a better gun in 9mm than in .40 S&W.

People whine online about the backstrap of the PPS, but I've never actually heard of one breaking in real life.

It's like saying don't buy a Glock because it won't fire if its plastic trigger breaks.

The PPS is a high-quality and durable pistol, just like all the Ulm-manufactured "real" Walthers.

Its also been out for quite a while now and you'd think any bugs left to be worked out have been by now. Mines an 09 production model, never had an issue.

Good deal guys, and just to clarify she's already test fired one and didn't mind the recoil. I don't know why or how since I find 40 uncomfortable to shoot myself-(I carry a 45 XDs or 1911) but whatever works for her. My only concern was the backstrsp thanks
