Hello, I've been shooting and reloading a lot. (.223 & .308, only got a single stage press, it's work!) I want to shoot more but don't want to be picking up brass every time I go to the range. Which would you prefer, a Ruger 77/17 or a Saiga sporter? I've been watching youtube videos on .17's doing cool things. Also If I go the .17 route where's a good starting point for optics? I'm old school irons. (Scoping a Saiga may be a challenge too) 7.62X39 just sounds like a lot of fun and can some times find a box of 20 wolves for under $4.00 Anyone have a 77/17 & like it? I've already read a few dislikes? I'll be happy if I can kill a rabbit at 100 yards.

Why not consider the best of both worlds and buy a Ruger 77/22 in 22 Hornet. Ruger makes several models of the Hornet and it's an easy round to load and a fun round to shoot. Also by reloading, it would be a very inexpensive round to shoot wspecially compared to the other two. JMHO!

I don't want to reload. I just want to shoot and brush the brass forward of the firing line. Reloading can be a pain in the A$$.

easy answer: get both.
hard to say what you would like more plus your choices are very different. since you already have a 223 and 308 i would lean more toward the 17 hmr. i would definately pick a CZ over the Ruger.
my 17 has a leupold VX II 2x7 on top and it is the best scope i have owned but that's not sayin' much. nikon and burris seem to have a good rep. how much are you looking to spend on a scope?

For optics 0 - $200? I've heard in most cases $ dictates the quality of the scope. My Steiner binocs are way better than my buddie's Bushnells... Never used a scope this'll be my 1st time. Barska?

scope

i've been looking sideways at the new redfeild scopes lately. the life time warranty looks really good for the price. plus it has gotten great reviews on opticplanet.

Been there too, lots of good scopes & reviews. Optics can be worth more than the gun itself. I need to find that balance. Is there a such thing as too much scope or does it just make it better?

I have a Ruger 17 and it is great! Here are some pics..

It is just a regular blued/walnut, but it shoots great. I settled on the Hornadys.

I have a Leupold VXI 4x12. I also like ATEC's and Nikon Buckmaster's.

too much scope? for me there is and it is dictated by my use and budget. others would dissagree but i think that past a certain price point you reach a demished return.
i have an older redfeild tracker that is a POS. crummy glass, fogs up, leaks like a seve. i would'nt hesitate on the revolution redfeilds. made in US. owned by Leupold, lifetime warranty and a great price. the VX II was twice the price, same warranty, same manufactor. for twice the money i'm sure the mechanics are better and the coatings are better. i don't know if that matters but it does kill your budget.

I know you didn't ask about it but, why not just get a .22lr like the Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60 or a bolt action .22? Ammo is going to be a heck of a lot cheaper than .17hmr and 7.62x39.

Here's some ammo prices I found just by doing a quick look (I'm choosing the cheapest stuff out of the group to compare)

.17hmr - 50 rounds = $10.60
7.62x39 - 20 rounds = $3.59
.22lr - 50 rounds = $1.77

You can see that you'd be able to do alot more shooting with the .22lr. Since you already have a .223 and .308, if it were me I'd go with the .22lr for really cheap plinking. A decent .22lr rifle will run you a good bit less then both the Saiga and the Ruger 77/17.

Hope this helps

22lr good but I want velocity & range. I've handled & shot 10/22. Ok, I guess.

Scoping the Saiga is easy, go to Kalinka Optics and buy the Russian BP-02 scope mount, slides onto the rail on the left side of the receiver, is sturdy, light, returns to zero when removed and reinstalled and the BP-02 is a low rail, hugs the top of the dust cover. I can also tell you how to make the weaver rail even lower if you end up getting one.
Another low scop mount option is the Dogleg Scope Mount from Texas Weapon Systems. Gen1 TWS Dogleg practically sat on the dust cover. Many users reported it not touching but was so close you couldn't squeeze a dollar bill between the rail and the cover. Now, Gen2 is easier to install and fits nice.
I'm oldschool, I like the Belarus-made BP-02. http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/mounts...side-mount-to-weaver-rail-w-black-finish.html

Do you run Saiga mags, or did you file the latch & install a bullet guide? Which is better? I can afford regular Saiga mags.
