Ok, so the Mauser "Tanker" got me thinking. I've been wanting a rugged, short, iron-sighted bolt action .308 for hunting, general "fun" (oh yeah and SHTF :D ) and that Mauser is pretty tempting, but at $500 I was thinking of possibly making my own .308 short ("Tanker") rifle for less.

A total length of about 37" would be great, as would the ability to put a ghost ring or peep sight near the back and of course, in .308. So I could go for a Mauser, rebarrel one, or find one already in .308 and chop the barrel and put on a new stock and sights. Or, I could go with an Enfield and basically do the same thing, find one in .308 or rebarrel one for it, etc. Or, I could just get the "Tanker" Mauser.

The Enfield is a bit more tempting since the magazine holds 10 and the action is notoriously smooth. Of course I would want to do this as cheap and good as possible. I also, do not want to do this if it would make too many of you cry because I am butchering history! Call me Bubba, but of course I wouldn't be the first person to do this, there are generally a LOT of these rifles out there and I could do it on a generally poor condition rifle since I am possibly changing so much out. I do want a gun in the end that is short, accurate, reliable and durable.

So, Advice please. What would be cheaper? Which rifle in your opinion would be the better to do this on? What other considerations should I take into account? Am I leaving a gun out that would also be easily converted to a short .308?

I remember seeing for sale Indian made Ishapore 7.62x51 nato rifles that have been chop down to jungle carbines. I am not sure if they are any still around. That might fit you need. It was a few years ago at a gunshow in my area they were asking some thing in 250 or 300 range.

One word of caution on the .308 Enfeild's, they were originally designed for a rimmed cartridge .303, and only have a small screw on the left side of the receiver to act as a ejector. Sometimes it will change posistion during use, and the round will not be kicked off the extractor claw. Other than that little problem I do not like the forward ounted sight as much as a good peep sight at the rear of the action. I would not hesitate to "Bubba" one if it was found at a good price, but might recommend a comm-bloc 7.62x54 as a cheaper/easier to write off truck gun.

An Ishapore 2A1 is NOT

It's NOT the exact same as an Enfield receiver. The entire weapon is made to function with the NATO 7.62 cartridge. It's NOT made of cast iron or pig ????.

Some Enfield actions work fine when rebarreled to .308 some will not.

You might want to get some information from www.surplusrifle.com on rebarreling a .303 to .308 or acquiring the 2A, 2A1, or the arsenal refitted
or bubba'd .308s

why not get a cheap mosin nagant m44 or m38. they both have relatively short barrels, are tough and very affordable. AIM surplus sells them for 70 bucks! At a gun show, youre likely to find one cheaper.

7.62x54 is the only set back, because you said you wanted .308. However, 7.62x54 is widely available, cheap and powerful.

Also, there used to be a company that sold a "survival rifle". It was an enfield jungle carbine in .308 that had a stainless finish and all sorts of other attractive doodads. However, I was told that they were garbage. And on top of that, they are rare apparently.

Another vote for the Mosin Nagant M44.

If it's tough enough for illiterate peasants to use in the Russian winter, its tough enough for me & you to stuff in our pickup trucks.

two things, the mosin 38, tanker carbine, for a bolt and the Saiga 308, with the 16 in bbl. their cost is 100 and 275 bucks, respectively.

I know it's not technically a "tanker" but a Ruger M77 International in 308. Should be able to find a used one for well under $500, already have iron sights, 37" with an 18" barrel and about 7lbs. Limited 5 round ammo capacity though. I've hit man sized targets at 300 yards standing and 400 from a modified rest with a 2x7 leupold scope.

Hey Tex, buy mine! I spent about $400 "Bubbaizing" this enfield for a hunting rifle. Just to find out it is too long to use in our hunting stands. I keep bumping the roof when I raise the rifle. If I don't sell it, I'm thinking of cutting the barrel and installing the flash hider the jungle carbine had. I also welded up (spot welds) rear sight mounting pin holes on the barrel, but I could drill those out.

Make me an offer if interested. BTW, mine has the original 12 rd. magazine.

I take you are in Texas......

Just about every pawn shop in the DFW area has a bubba custom Enfield........Get a M38 Mosin Nagant. They are short carbines and fairly accurate......chris3

Forgot to add: The folding bayonet on a M44 Mosin Nagant makes a dandy rifle holder while you open your beer.........chris3
