The Disaster of Wildlife is pretty good on the elk side, NWS on the fishing end at least on the western slope.

Virginia through last year was still worried enough about CWD, that they have open season on elk throughout all of deer season, so no tags required. However, our only elk are those that wander across from Kentucky's introduced herd, so the pickins are fairly slim. Over the past seven years, 27 elk have been killed in Virginia, 17 of them taken in Wise County, but they're there. If you don't get drawn somewhere else, you could practice here.
