Was the closing of Springfield Armory good?

according to most people round here...private enterprise - good.....government employees - bad

Depends on how you look at it.

The City of Springfield still hasn't really recovered fro the closing of the Armory.

From the mid 1800's thru the 1960's Springfield was a truly well off city. Now? Well the population is smaller than it was in 1900 and is still shrinking. There are tons of abandoned homes, and the city finances are managed by the state, because they are always bankrupt, despite sky-high property taxes.

Was it good for gun design and manufacture? It's hard to say. Not much has changed since then, except for CNC machinery and polymers.

From a military continuity of supply point of view, I think the closing of the armory and .gov owned ammunition plants was probably a mistake.
