Does it get anymore ridiculous. It's said that guns don't kill people, people do. And with whatever means necessary. Here they realize that....but they continue to focus on the tool and not the person. It's almost be funny if it wasn't true. I thought it was an article from the Onion at first.

Perhaps background checks for kitchen utensils and gardening tools is in order.

NY Senator Who Pushed Gun Control, Now Pushing Machete Control

EXCLUSIVE: Under Avella’s proposal, possessing a machete could lead up to a year in jail. He plans to introduce a bill to establish a ban, which is in response to an incident in July on Long Island where a man hacked a teenager to death.

State Sen. Tony Avella plans to introduce a bill to ban the possession of the scary blades in New York.

“The fact that anyone can easily purchase this potentially lethal tool is just crazy,” he said.

Smaller knives such as switchblades and gravity knives are already banned and listed as deadly weapons under state law, but machetes are considered the same as butcher knives.

Lol, I can easily purchase a chainsaw too. Can do some damage with that. Maybe we should ban those too based on the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" :)

NY sucks. I hate this state. I work in it but live in PA. I make a 45min drive to work everyday and am completely happy with it because I don't live in this communist state.

Why are you surprised? It's just one more step to force control of the people by disarming them. Step by step, a little at a time.

Read up on what England has done.
Pretty much, any kitchen knife that is sharper than a butter knife has been regulated/outlawed.

That is where we are heading.

Creeping incrementalism.

Actually you need to be 18+ to even buy plastic spoons over there that's just how crazy it is

Have to post a ban on glass bottles, they can be cracked across a table's edge and used to deadly effect(witness all the bar fights in the movies). All restaurants now will have to use plastic cutlery and plastic wine bottles. Dang, there goes another billion bbls of oil. Well "Fracking" seems to have remedied that problem...................Can you say unintended consequences?

And it's always referred to as "common sense" and "reasonable". An inch here, an inch there; next thing you know it's a mile. That's how this creeping incrementalism stuff works. If you don't agree with their "common sense", "reasonable" whatever it's implying that anyone who would dare disagree with their control plans has no common sense and is very unreasonable.

Of course, he has two, wonder how many people he's killed with them? You know, once you get them in your hands they take over.. No doubt he'd be exempt under the law.

Long story, but I got cornered into cooking a pig once that someone else had flubbed up. It was decided to cook it on a grate over a fire, like big pork chops, but it was still a whole pig. I had a cheapo machete in my van, beheaded that pig with one whack, then split the carcass lengthwise with a few more whacks. I was kinda shocked how easy it was.

This happened in NY, by the way.....

So yeah, they're damn sure deadly! But outlawing them is just a retarded idea.

This is the kid of idiot who would punish someone for tearing that tag off of a pillow. You know, the one that says "do not remove under penalty of law".:banghead::banghead::cuss: How do people like this make it through life as far as they do without shooting themselves in the rear end with a bow or something stupid like that??? They live such pathetic lives that they do everything they can to make others miserable, it is truly sad.:(

I can't imagine how we allow even little kids to have access to deadly weapons laying around all over the place. People have been using these weapons to kill since time began (did Cain use one on his brother?) and it needs to stop. Ban ROCKS before it's too late. And let's not forget water. It can be used as a weapon. People have been drowning each other in muddy rivers for too long. All you crazies out there need to get all the rocks and muddy water out of your head.

Apparently this nut has never done any yard work. I use my machete all the time. I've tried lots of tools for certain jobs (like greenbriers) and nothing works as well as a good, sharp machete. But what about my axe? Isn't it dangerous too? And my hammer? And I heard that a lot of people were killed with the jaw bone of an ass. Should we ban asses?

Montana Republican Representative David Moore wants to make wearing Yoga pants in public a criminal offense. So yes, they want to ban asses.

And no, he (NY D Senator) probably doesn't do any yard work, he probably has a guy for that.

OK, I'll admit it; when I followed the link to this story, I thought I was going to visit the Onion. How's it feel to be a laughingstock, Sen. Avella?

Now get out of America, would you please? The founding fathers are spinning in their graves like helicopter rotors....

It would be easier if the govt took away all utensils and issued each citizen one dull spork.

The interesting part is that he's reacting to cultural bias. Machetes are common in tropical regions and the tool of choice in the bush, they do a great job. What has happened is that some have transplanted that utility to North America, where they aren't all that.

The preferred tool in the field in climates where there are freezing temps is the hatchet. Europeans brought them to the new world and they took off like hotcakes because they can deal with the heavier woody plants in the environment which can withstand freezing.

You want to camp in the bush in an area, you take the tools that work, machetes aren't all that dealing with heavier woody brush, saplings, and trees. Nonetheless people try to use them outside their environmentally based optimal area - and that is where the cultural disconnect pops up.

Cold temps, cold culture peoples. Warm temps, warm culture peoples. You have a Euro background politician trying to ban a Mediterranean/idigeneous peoples' tools because they don't like or understand them.

Same as banning the Bowie in the 1800's, politicians in control who were from a different background made a culturally biased decision and forced knife users to conform to their view of how society should work.

It's not about the tool, it's about who is in power.

You joke, but that really is the liberal nirvana they are trying to achieve.

If asses are banned where would we get politicians from?

How about blaming the perpetrator instead, before baseball bats are illegal too. How about sticks and stones?
