Anybody know what a 1/2" chrome ball on the forward part of the stock on an old 722 Remington Varmint rifle could be for ? Was there some kind of bipod or tripod that clamped on it ? it is just the round ball on a stud ahead of the sling swivel . I don't think it is a hand stop as it is pretty small. I have been searching old Freeland catalogs and can't find any thing. It is a very neat Remington 722 in what was .222 now stamped 5.56 Match in a machined flat , the whole action seems "blueprinted " with obviously squared up breech and engine turned bolt . It has a 10.oz trigger and a custom extended bolt knob and on the 26" mirror bore barrel is a 6-24 Bausch and Lomb scope, a glass bedded all original stock in satin oil and reblued nicely. Part of an estate sale I bought. The rifle was $175 but I had to pay $150 more to get the scope and mounts to put back on the target blocks.

Back in the 70's a friend was looking at a used varmint rifle with a bipod that attached to the forend with some sort of ball and socket method instead of a more conventional sling stud mount. I only have a vague memory of it because it was unconventional and unusual compared to what we were accustomed to seeing. My best guess is that your gun had one of those bipods that I can only recall seeing one time. Perhaps an early bipod design that was ahead of its time and never caught on and was discontinued shortly thereafter?

Sounds like a neat outfit, ball and all. Please show pictures.
There were a lot of .222s rechambered .223 and they did ok until the Army and XC shooters went nuts with heavy bullets and fast twist.

I have seen a rifle with that on it many years ago at a gun show. The fellow said it was used with a support of some kind. Don't remember if he called it a bipod etc.

I am gonna take a picture and am willing to purchase what ever attaches there :) THANKS FOR THE RESPONSES. i HAVE A FEELING THIS IS A TACK DRIVER PROBABLY 55 GRAIN BULLETS MAX

I shoot 55 Gr all the time out of my 1 in 14 .222 Mag, which has similar ballistics to the .223. It struggled with the only 60 Gr bullet I tried.

My 14 twist .22-250 shot 60 gr JSP well, JHP wild. The hollowpoint was just that little bit longer.
I am sure a 55 gr flatbase spitzer will be stable out of a 14 twist, but if I am going to shoot a target rifle, I shoot target bullets.

I’m picturing something like a RAM Mount. My particular application was for a depth finder using several bases, each with a ball, an armiture with sockets on each end, and an adapter with another ball, all of which allowed you to swivel, tilt, cant, and change elevation. More or less like a ball head tripod without legs. https://www.rammount.com/?format=html

Gonna revive this thread with a couple questions..........Ever find out what that is? ...............Still planning on a picture?....... Just curious because I know I've seen something like that long ago and far away but can't quite recall the details of it. All I remember was it was on a varmint rifle that my buddy was drooling on.

I have an ongoing issue with posting pictures on this forum. I paid photobucket 99$ to host non commercial on forums but they have blocked this one for some idiot reason (maybe because I could sell something) , anyway I could shoot a picture from my phone but have not been able to load it to thread specific posts like this one. I give up for now trying to find what attached to the ball, I've spent to much time on it , I will use my Harris bipods

Not sure what type phone you have, but on my iPhone I simply tap the “Upload a File” tab which then asks for a location. I choose “Photo Library”, select the photos, then add them once they automatically load.

Out of sequence but this is the third pic of the files loading.

Choosing the “Upload a File” tab above brings up the screen below.
