The wife went to work, leaving me and Da Boy unsupervised and all...scary thought, but here we were, and guns and ammo available...so, lets go shooting!
Yeah, ha, ha, you funny. We forgot what weekend it was. See, with our weird schedules, the only reason I knew it was Thanksgiving was the meal my Sgt and I brought in for my staff AND no Administration running amok everywhere. Big bonus points there. Plus, we had a very short and almost painful "holiday feast" at the in-laws, MUCH noise, much shouting, kids wanting attention 24/7, and we bailed very fast. So, for us, the holiday might as well not exist.
UNTIL...we tried to go to the range. I have never SEEN so many people at the firing line, not to mention people literally waiting to get a bench. Holy Garbanzo Beans, Batman, on one hand this really bodes well for the shooting sports when you see some many families with youngsters learning gun use and safety on the line...dagnabbit, I got loads I worked no for a week I wanna shoot! *throws self on floor, flailing arms and legs yelling "WAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!"*
Oh well, at least I live somewhere where we can drop down to the range whenever we feel like it, we have the legal ability to carry multiple firearms with no interference from Aunt Sam, where we can make our own ammo legally, and where we live in the best, (subjective or not, I think so, former US serviceman here), country in the world.
On the other hand, on the way home from the aborted range trip, I picked up the last of the surprise for my loving wife, as she continues her fight against the Big C - supplies that will recreate the Thanksgiving feast as it SHOULD have gone, taters, ham, pie, stuffing, (we both hate turkey), fresh green beans, etc.
Maybe not going to the range wasn't so bad after all. Excuse me, gotta get that full ham in the oven.

Ah, maybe you can get your loads tested next time.
You sound like my local parts guy. I asked him about his Thanksgiving, and he had ribeye and baked potato!
I said "what would the pilgrims think?"
He said, "screw those guys!"!
Most importantly.....Best wishes for your Mrs.
Godspeed in her battle.
The Pilgrims woulda thought, "Dagnabbit, how come WE didn't have ribeyes!"

I am a member of a private range with about 750 members. I never go on the weekend when I can have the place to myself just about any week day morning. I can't imaging going on black Friday.
Yeah, that was kinda the problem - we don't really pay attention to much of that and forgot.

I skipped Friday, figuring it would be busy. I was the only person on the 100-200 yard line Saturday afternoon, though there were shooters on the pistol range and in some of the tactical bays. Nice being able to take my time.

I went to my Sister's place for Thanksgiving in Michigan. Saturday I drove back to Illinois and visited with a life long best friend. We had lunch and then stopped by a gun shop with indoor range. The place was packed with people.

Side note, Illinois new gun ban, left the shop looking altogether depressing. No semi-auto rifles for sale on the racks. They have a ton of handguns, some pump shotguns, and a few lever actions for sale.

we don't really pay attention
That's yer problem right there. ;)

I'm fortunate enough to have a pistol range at home, but no suitable rifle distance, so I put 50 into targets from a BHP.
Possible trip to club membership range this afternoon if we don't get rained out.

Being retired I have to check the day/date frequently because life can be a little like the movie Groundhog Day!
Same here. After 4 years of retirement on 4th of July, 2019 (My day of independence from work), some weeks only thing that reorient me back to what day of the week it is the trash truck running. "What? It's Thursday already? ... Dang, I thought it was like Tuesday or something"

We had juicy ribeye steaks and medium rare tri-tip for Thanksgiving ... Yum.

When wife and I considered our retirement location choices from east to west coast (Wife's criteria was it had to be at the beach, any beach, preferably with lot of trees near river), my criteria was ready access to BLM spots for shooting and cool ambient temperature around 50-70F year round.

So we retired at a place where I am 30-45 minutes from 3 BLM shooting spots that essentially allow me to shoot 50-100-300 yards without fighting the range crowd overlooking the ocean or river on the way there. And if all the spots are taken (rarely the case), I can simply choose a 25 yard spot and shoot from side of the dirt road as I am on BLM land.

Another nice thing about shooting on BLM land is I can set up portable reloading station on shooting table (Or inside the Pacifica minivan with all the seats folded into the floor for rainly/drizzly day prone shooting on tri-fold mattress) for 0.1 gr incremental powder charge load development. If I get hungry/chilly, I fire up the small propane stove and warm up canned chili/beef stew/soup or boil water for coffee. 😁 (I carry sleeping bag and emergency food/water survival kit so I could even camp for several days on tri-fold mattress and even get 2-3 bars of cell service if I hold the cellphone overhead just right)

My private gun club gets busy on weekends. When my family and I go there on weekends we go very early to beat the crowds and leave as it begins to fill up. I never go except on weekdays when alone. One of the reasons I live where I do is the tremendous amount of BLM and state land available. It's only a few more miles drive to BLM land where you seldom see another person and it's is easy to shoot safely with no one at all to annoy you. There is one place that you can shoot down an old caliche oilfield road for 1000 yards or more with a 200' high backstop. The oil is played out so no traffic at all.

My sister lives in Illinois and it took forever for he to get approved to buy a hand gun, she’s been waiting over a year to get a carry permit.

I asked my friend if he'd gotten his carry permit yet. He said no and that he's finally gotten his wife on board on moving out of Illinois.

Well, I was in West by God and hunted till dusk.........TGD always follows and is never mid day in them thar hills!
