Finally got one for the freezer. I was pretty happy with the performance of the Thompson, and the Knight ballistic tip .50 cal, 230 grain sabots. The shot was at about 50 yards. She dropped like a rock and rolled down the ridge to me (yeah!). Only had to drag her about 70 yards.

Tarp or no tarp, if I put a deer in our SUV, divorce would be pending by close of business. :D

Nice pics, good shooting, and hearty congratulations.

I shot a buck at Thanksgiving and just picked up the meat from the processor the other day. First time I'd gotten ground venison, and boy, was there a bunch of it! I don't know if my freezer will handle another deer. Had veni-burgers last night. Quite tasty.

I wanted a pick-up, but she insisted on the SUV. The deer hauling deal was struck prior to the purchase. :D Last year, I hauled a buck home that had been in rut....and that was a long stinky ride. Thanks!

Dropped like a rock. Where'd you shoot her? I don't see a head injury (my first dropped like a rock from a head shot, but I placed the bullet too close to the front and had to administer the coup d'grace).

The bullet entered behind the shoulder on the right side (high) and knocked out a chunk of spine. She dropped, tried to stand, and then fell and rolled down the ridge. If you enlarge the photo you can see the entry hole just behind the elbow and the exit hole on the other side (just above ,and behind, where the barrel meets the forearm of the rifle).

Very Nice !

I traded in my SUV for a pickup this year. At first I was a bit reluctant; but the first deer this year capped it. I love the pickup. It takes a while to get the smell out of an SUV. I'll never live down the time I put one in my wife's minivan.

Guyon - I have my venison burger mixed at 4:1 with some lean ground beef. There's just enough fat in the beef to make burgers stick together on the grill.

Happy eating !

One of my favorite ways to prepare tenderloin is to cut it about 1" thick & marinate for 1 day. Take the sliced tenderloin, wrap some bacon around it, & grill to your liking. Taste better than a filet IMO.

fwiw, i bought a rack from cabelas that fits in the receiver hitch on my jeep that works great for hauling deer. i think it was about $60 iirc. just a thought. saddlebum

Want a real mess to clean up? Try carrying a 100 lb feral hog in the roof luggage rack.
Wasn't enough room inside the Cherokee, had to put it on top long enough to get back to camp. Windshield washers had a hard time keeping up.

Before I got my little Ranger P/U, I had to haul several large deer in an Escort station wagon. The only comment my wife made..."How the hell did you get that big deer into that little car?" Dead deer don't faze her a bit, but show her a 4 inch garter snake and she REALLY has something to say! I try to count the blessings that I have and not sweat anything else.

My freezer has a fresh load of venison for the year too. Decent sized doe, traveled maybe 100 yards before piling up. I ate the last of the previous years deer chops after dropping her off at the meat cutters. Still waiting for my jerky to get done. Yum!

One of my favorite ways to use ground venison is for deerburger helper, chili, and homemade spaghetti sauce.

I just had fresh baked backstrap tonight for dinner. If you fry your backstrap you are wasting good meat IMO. Anything can taste good fried. You marinate a good piece of meat in garlic, onion powder, and liquid smoke, then bake in an oven bag with worchestershire sauce. The smell alone will convert the most die hard vegan (yes my ex girlfriend). The meat will melt in your mouth and you have to hide all your guns to keep from going out and mowing down an entire field of deer.

earlier this year my wife insisted on taking her mercury to go visit the in-laws...i had antelope tags in my pocket, and made a pitch for my f-250, but she didn't want to ride in that... did you know that 2 antelopes can fit into the trunk of a mercury grand marquis?

after the antelope hunt, went on a deer hunt... wife talked her father into loaning us his blazer so we wouldn't put deer into her car... f-i-l says to just tie 'em up on the roof w/ a rope. got 2 very nice bucks down (read dressed weights in excess of 200 pounds each), and there was nothing in the blazer to tie the deer to the roof w/. did you know that you can stuff 2 mature bucks in the cargo area of a blazer (think little blazers, not the old big ones), w/ the back seats up? <-- couldn't put the seats down because then we wouldn't have any place to put guns, packs, etc. amazing how small a blazer is... i thought suv's were s'posed to be big??

Grandpa Freeman always said, "can't eat horns, boy."

Nice one, El Tejon. Can I use this one if I give Grandpa Freeman credit?

I am still LMAO.

Nice deer. Inside your nice SUV is a little creepy though. What county are you hunting? Looks like it was a warm day.

OH25- It was a near perfect morning (45 Deg. and clear) in Hocking Co.
I had been out all morning and had seen this small herd from a distance...but couldn't get up on them. I went down to the truck to eat lunch, and had just started to walk back to where they were (about 2pm), when they all came running in my direction (I later talked to the neighbor who had spooked them while getting firewood). I dropped to one knee and took the shot when they stopped and looked back toward the neighbor's place. I guess that's part of the fun, you just never know what or when something will happen. Made my day a lot brighter though.

one more deer hauling story, then i'll stop... i got a million of 'em - we have fun when we hunt, and the fun doesn't stop when a critter goes down!

i was fortunate enough to tag out first one year on a very nice 4x4 whitetail. father-in-law had locked the keys in his truck, and all that was available was brother-in-law's little car (small chevy 2-door... bigger than an escort, smaller than a camaro - whatever that is). anyway, since it was warm out, had to get the deer on ice. what to do? can't put him in the trunk, too much stuff there... well... we put him in the front seat, in a seated position, and seat belted him in....

laughed so hard on our way back into town that there was tears in our eyes... shoulda seen the looks we got!
