We sealed the deal tonight after I got off of work. He left work early. It must be nice being a Doctor. I met up with him outside of a Sushi bar where he was having dinner with his family. Over all the gun was in good condition. It has some surface rust here and there on the outside but no big deal. The bore is pristine. One thing I did notice was a little and I mean a little side to side play where the barrel meets the receiver. A good tightening of the barrel nut took care of most of it. The barrel is missing it's bead and has a raised rib. Here are some pics. I didn't clean it yet so, it may look a little dirty.

How'd I do?

Ya did good, Flip. If you ever decide you don't like it, I guarantee you'll not lose a dime.

Get a Scotchbrite pad from the grocery store, the kind used on dishes. Load it with oil and rub that rust off.

What choke has this?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what choke it has. What ever it has, it's a fixed choke. I really don't have a use for the gun in it's current configuration beaing as though I don't hunt but, I couldn't pass it up. I'll keep an eye out for a shorter barrel and some not so nice wood furnature. My real intent is to put together an old school hd shotty. I'll keep the original part just incase I ever get an invite to go hunting.

Flip.

Other than gagging the computers of all us poor schmucks who are still cursed with dialup by posting DSL-loads of pics on one thread, you did fine. 8^)

The original choke marking should be around the proofs, Flip. Check the barrel on the left side just forward of the receiver.

And you can use that wood for an Old School HD tool. Nothing says it cannot be pretty....

Dave, where can I get a shorter barrel for it? It's chambered for 2-3/4 inch shells only. I really don't want to buy anything new. It wouldn't make sense to spend a chunk on a 100.00 shotgun.

Flip,
My wingmaster is just about the twin to yours but I paid $25 more. Good luck on finding an 18"-20" barrel. I looked for about a year and managed to collect barrels in full, modified, IC, and skeet chokes but nothing shorter than 26". All on various auction sites. You would probably have to buy something else and get it cut to the length you want. Cheapest seem to be the 30" full choke barrels without a rib. You can usually find them for around $60-$70.

An 870 with a 28" Mod choke barrel runs very close to a perfect all around wingshooter, Flip.

Short barrels are around. Check with your local gun shops.

For Old School, I'd get a 20" barrel with open sights on it. Mount that and a set of sling swivels and you'll have Old School up the wazoo.Cruiser gun ca 1960.

And a fine venison gitter.

my father has the same exact gun....he bought when it first came out the late 70's? (not sure could have been the early 80's) it has been out on many bird hunting trips and has performed flawlessly...I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Actually, together the pictures don't even add up to 3 megapixels :neener:

You got a great deal, I'm jealous.

I called Remington today.

I gun was made in 1979. I also asked about what barrels I can put on my shotgun. I was under the impression that I could only put a 2-3/4 inch barrel on but, I can put any barrel on it. I just can't shoot anything bigger that 2-3/4. No biggie. I have my Express for that but, I couldn't ever see me shooting anything bigger than 2-3/4. At least I have a wider choice in the barrels I can put on it. I'm going to keep my eye out for a blued 20 incher with rifle sights.

Thanks, Flip.

hey flip...... great buy,,,,

i just saw an ad yesterday that had 870 slug barrels with rifle sights on sale for $125,,, i think it was midway

don't think you will find one much cheaper,,,i will look for the ad if you are interested

I found one with the same wood furniture as yours, but mine has a 20" rifle sight barrel with a 7 round extension on it, kind of a beautiful riot gun to match my throwaround police gun.

I traded my 3" MIM S&W model 65 for it though, worth a bit more than $100, but I think I got a good deal, the shotgun doesn't have a scratch on it and the action is the slickest I've ever felt....

You should just have the barrel cut down and a bead sight put on, shouldn't cost too much.
