Howdy folks,
It's time for some new firepower...at least soon. Once I get all of the re-enlistment paperwork finished, I'll be getting a fair sum from the .gov. Most of it is going to pay off some debt and get set up for a cross-country move, but 2500 is what my wife and I agreed on for me to play with. I'd like to get something in .22LR (I'm thinking a 10/22), something in .45 ACP or .40 S&W for winter carry, and something that will turn heads at the range. I'd also like to get something that would cover me for a Mad Max Road Warrior SHTF situation, preferably in .223 or .308. I hope that's specific enough, if not, I'll clarify some more.

What do you already own? I remember when I was starting out, it was in a way easier to justify purchases because I "needed" everything, just depended what I wanted more and what people usually consider a well balanced collection should have, such as a .357mag revolver, a .22lr chambered handgun and rifle, a 12gauge shotgun, ect.

Now I have to really think to justify why I need a 12th weapon chambered in .45acp!

I currently own the following
Ruger P89 (9x19mm)
Hungarian PA-63 (9x18mm)
Romanian TT-33 (7.62x25)
Steven's (?) Single Shot Rifle (.22 S-L-LR)
Mossberg (?) Bolt Action (20 Gauge)
M44 Mosin Nagant (7.62x54R)

Between Anniversary Gifts and Deployment Perk$, I should have most of the following in 3 months:
Hi-Point 995 (9x19mm)
SKS (7.62x39)
Mossberg 500 (12 Gauge)
Ruger 10/22 (.22LR)

How can you be from Cali and not have a Jennings or a Bryco? That's almost unpatriotic!

California!?!?!? I am merely stationed out of California against my will. I resent that remark. I am a North Dakotan through and through, if you don't believe me, stop by my house when I'm cooking Flieschkukele or Lefse (but sorry, no lutefisk for this guy). You have disrespected me. You shall rue this day!

Seriously though, I have a dumb question for you. What's a Jennings or Bryco?

Very poorly made handguns that were made in CA for a long period of time, many of these guns were similar and the companies making them were interrelated in many cases. Anti gunners as well as pro gunners in many cases love to hate them.u

Some such as the Raven/Phoenix arms in .25acp can work surprisingly well though and afford someone some protection if dirt poor. These gns sold in the millions and some are still in the class and still being produced such as Cobra and Jiminez arms.

As for lutefisk I could never bring myself to eat fish with lye, heck I rarely eat pork! I'm not familiar with the other dishes.

That was the point. I haven't met a soul from outside of North Dakota (except a few nice Norwegian and German gentlemen) who knew what the other two were. It's our little secret.

Gentle topic nudge:
Anyone know about the classicarms.us CETME's that are running cheap? That could be my Mad Max .308 if it's a quality product.

So far you tend to more affordable weapons. I do too.

Instead of the Mossberg 500 get a Saiga 12. I have mine fully converted with folder and pistol grip. That shotgun gets more attention than anything else I ever see at the range.

Norinco 1887 lever action 12 gauge like Der Arnold used in Terminator is another range attention getter. Pretty inexpensive.

Saiga also makes an affordable 308 although I would prefer a FAL.

How about a Ruger Mark III? everyone needs a 22 target pistol. inexpensive to buy and very inexpensive to operate.

Rock Island 1911 45. Again affordable and if you pay attention to later reviews pretty well thought of.

im not particularly fond of lutefisk :p but my grandfather usually makes some and brings up for my mom to cook :p

lefse however, i enjoy :D

*Norway FTW*

Yup. I admit that I am a cheapskate. I'm a budget shooter through and through. I'm considering getting a CMMG Bargin Bin AR. I'm rather proficient with an M16 so it shouldn't be too much of a change...but that still leaves the door open for quite a few more guns to be easy on my pocket (and when the zombies come, I'll have ammo in many calibers so if I find some more ammo, I'll probably have a gun from which to shoot it).

Bryco/Davis/Jennings/Lorcin/Raven were all a part of the group that the "Violence Policy Center" termed the 'Ring Of Fire' gun makers.

All of those were companies that made the small, less expensive handguns in usually .22/.25/.32/.380 calibers, as well as some of the 2-shot 'derringers'...Davis probably being the most well-known of those derringers.

Aaryq..nothing wrong with being a 'cheapskate'. Several budds I shoot with jokingly call ourselves "The Cheap Galoots". Most of the stuff in "Foggy's Artiller Locker" is of the lesser-priced category...Mossberg 500, Maverick 88 shotguns..Ruger revolvers and auto-loaders..Mosin-Nagant M-44 and a Yugo SKS. I almost forgot my 'snubby' .38Spl...an RG model 38. Oh yeah, I also have a Mossberg ATR-100 in .30-06..again, a budget-aware rifle, but a good shooter.

Most of us "Cheap Galoots" have Hi-Point pistols and carbines. I don't, but only because I am waiting for Hi-Point to release their carbine in .45ACP

Yeah...I don't know if I'm able to wait for the 45...plus if I don't wait, I'll have an excuse to get it when it comes out.

Between Anniversary Gifts and Deployment Perk$, I should have most of the following in 3 months:
Hi-Point 995 (9x19mm)
SKS (7.62x39)
Mossberg 500 (12 Gauge)
Ruger 10/22 (.22LR)

If you allready have a Ruger P89 why the highpoint?
Is the Ruger not heavy enough for you?:D

Saiga also makes an affordable 308 although I would prefer a FAL.

If you intend to aquire a respectable supply of magazines for a Saiga in .308, you might as well go ahead and buy the much more expensive FAL. Hi-Cap magazines for Saiga .308s cost $50 - $60 each. I've seen FAL mags advertised for less than $10 each. Either rifle with a good supply of magazines (10-12) will end up costing about the same.

If you're a "budget shooter" looking for a good AR that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, check out the Olympic Arms Plinker Plus 16" Carbine. Probably the least expensive entry-level AR on the market:

For something in 22 that will turn heads, get a GSG-5. They are selling for around $475 and will probably appreciate in the future. For a 45 get a 1911 or a Glock 21/30. Take care in the sandbox, hope you get some time off.

So you want 3 good guns for $2500

That is pretty easy. It sounds like you allreedy know that you want a 10-22.
While I don't usually recomend them they are a fine gun. I don't generally recomend them because, for me at least, they are not accurate enough. If you just want something that you can dump rounds through, get a basic 10-22. If you want accuracy to boot you can buy either their Target model or get a used one some-one has built. You can typically find a tack driver that someone has $700-$900 in for for $400+. You could also buy a Marlin or Savage bolt gun that are very accurate for less than what you would spend on the 10-22.

As for the carry pistol, if you are indeed frugal (don't say cheap):D, take a look at www.Summitgunbroker.com he has 3rd gen glocks with night sights for under $400. No, they're not pretty but you really won't find amore reliable pistol. Personnaly, I'd much rather have a reliable gun than a pretty one. Drool isn't all that good a lubricant, so I don't want people getting any on my guns.:D If you have to have something flashy, think about the Taurus PT1911. It has a lot of bells and whisltes for the money. I have handled it but not shot it and it looks and feels gooooooooood!:D Despite the fact that I am not a 1911 guy, I really don't like the cocked and locked idea, I might just break down and buy one. Summit also has some good deals on Smiths and Berretas as well.

As for the rifle, unless you are convinced that the 223 is worthless as a manstopper, and AR15/M16 is piece of junk I really wouldn't consider anything else. The first reason is that you are familiar with its operation and maintenance. Second, despite all the crap that you hear about them from the AK types they are one of the alltime great battle weapons. Ammo is still relateively cheap,by comparison anyway. Magazines are inexpesive and readily available, before any new bans that is. When I was in the Army, 20 years ago, I was friends with the armorer and I kept a shotgun in the Armory, as did a few others. If our guns broke, Ray would fix them. This was in Fort Riley Kansas by the way. It took me a while to figure out why all the guys who hunted only bought 308 rifles. Lets just say I don't believe that anybody ever bought practice ammo. Occasionally, Ray and one of the CWO's and myself would go off to one of the ranges for a day of plinking. Ray and the Warrant owned 1911's and Ray would sign oneout for me to play with. We got one of those hand throwers for clay targets and would pick up a case of pigeons for the shotguns too. If I had had an AR at the time, I am sure that I would never have bought ammo and with the first seargeant that I had back then I am pretty sure that he would have let me practice with it during regular range time. As it was back then, we occasionaly went to the range sloey to burn ammo to use up our allotment. Things might not be as leniant these days. Any way, if you are friends with an armorer he might be able to help you with building your own. You might want to take a look at www.Model1sales.com. Also, I hear smith is offering rebates on their ARs along with some good prices to start with. I have and Like my 2 Olympic guns very much. If I were to get another it might be their M4 with Black stainless barrel and a bunch of goodies. Get a Flat top for sure. You may want to scope it or put somethinglike an Eotech on it.

1) Basic 10-22 $250
2) Glock $400 get extra mags $10@
3) AR-15 $900 Flat top with carry handle
4) $100 for extra mags

That leaves about $850 for accesories like scopes or reloading equipment if you don't reload allready you should start.

For a fun .22 plinker, check out the Kel-Tec PLR-22. Same components of the PLR-16 only .22 LR is going to be a whole lot cheaper to buy in bulk than .223

Unfortunately, I don't know if it's legal in CA :(

Even though you tend toward frugal arms, you now have an opportunity to add some more expensive, though not frivolous firearms.

Here are some ideas;

1) No problem with a 10/22. Get a stainless one for $250 and add a .22 scope for $50, and a few 10-round mags and ammo. $400 total.

2) A classic service handgun, depending on what you like. Could be a 1911 (Taurus, S&W, Kimber, etc.). Or a Glock, SA XD, S&W M&P, CZ-75, Beretta 92, SIG, H&K. Or even a nice revolver such as S&W 686, Ruger Redhawk or SP101, etc. Say $1000, depending on choice. for this you could get a Glock AND a nice revolver, OR a decent Kimber 1911; plus mags.

3) That leaves about $1,100. You could get a Bargain bin AR15 for under $600, plus mags @ $13 each. Or get a new Stag/RRA/DPMS for $850. Or if you want something with a lot of character, you can get an M1 Garand for $600 - $900 depending on where you go (CMP or gun show/web).

You would still have $200 - $400 left over for ammo.
