Just had a inevitable occurance. Was doing some work on the front sight for my .44 mag Ruger Redhawk. Removed the front sight and the rod, and was pulling out the spring, and of course the darn thing shot off across the room and likely gone for good :banghead: Been crawling around for an hour and can't find the it anywhere. Let this be a lesson to ya, mind those little buggers :(
 
detent springs on AR15 lowers---multiple times but always managed to find them inside my small gun room.:eek:
 
Guilty.

I was reassembling an old J-Frame revolver that I detail stripped, and when I went to remove the hammer spring and rod (I'm not sure of their correct names), ZING! Across the room went the spring. I was able to find it after some poking around. I think that muttering, "Stupid, stupid, stupid!" under your breath helps when looking :D
 
I have often found that detail stripping and/or basic DIY service on handguns can be a quite effective way to finally get that long overdue cleanup accomplished of the floor or of a neglected corner of the workshop near the workbench.

I can also personally attest to the helpfulness of a humble and timely request for assistance from St. Anthony, the patron saint of finding lost items.
 
I also do all of that sort of thing up inside a clear gallon zip lock bag.

Edit to add: Credit to THR member(s) who told me that after *I* first complained about this happening to me. Knowledge shared! :)
 
Um...the bench is for assembly. DIS-assembly is properly accomplished in the bathtub, shower curtain pulled, drain closed and covered.

Also, have a credible story ready for when your wife finds you in the shower, fully clothed, playing with tools and a gun. She won't buy the spring thing. (Ask me how I know).
 
Did that taking apart an M1 carbine bolt, tiny part shot out and I spent a frustrating hour searching and finally cleaning the shop floor only to find it on the bench about 1" from the vice holding the bolt...
 
Put down a clean drop cloth---usually an old white sheet for me. If something falls of shoots away this will often help you find it reasonably fast.:) I am willing to bet if you have ever taken apart a firearm then the flying spring move has been added to your skill set.:D
 
A magazine spring retainer from a Remington 870 shotgun has enough power to temporarily blind you. Damn those spring loaded parts !
 
when I loose springs I turn out the lights and use a led mag light, something about that a slight blue color makes them stick our like a sore thumb
