Bear with me on this, because details are important here.

OK guys, here's a thought. I got this Savage 11G in .223 brand new in 2004:

As you can see, accutrigger-equipped, which also means it has a round receiver bridge at the rear. It is equipped with these sights:

I can't say too many bad things about these sights, other than that they're plastic and too "coarse" to use past 30 or 40 yards with any kind of precision. They're calibrated perfectly to the index marks and are fully adjustable for windage and elevation by using a small flat-head screwdriver. Downside is that they aren't all that functional.

So, browsing Brownell's and Midway, I see that the Williams WGRS is available for this particular receiver:

Sounds good. I could just take off the scope and rear sight and have a low-recoil, accurate rifle with peep sights -- a great water jug blaster and pumpkin hunting rifle, right? Almost.

The thing is, the front sight would not be to my liking. I want a thin flat-top blade, not a wide bead that is hard to make precise hits with. The front blade of a 1903A3 is an example of what I like. However, we're getting to my real question here: Lyman has the model 17 front sight with inserts, as seen here:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=7959/Product/TARGET_FRONT_SIGHT

My front sight dovetail measurements are as follows:
3/8 at bottom of dovetail
1/2 at top of dovetail

The front sight ramp is some kind of plastic, and I'm hoping that won't be an issue.

Now we have established the setup I have and the components I'm considering purchasing. Here's the question: will all of this work?

My current front sight is a hair under 1/2" high -- I'm guessing .494 without calipers handy. The first Brownell's link above says "with 538M bead." Does that mean that the bead ought to be .538" tall for correct calibration?

If that's the case, there's only one model of Lyman 17 front that's taller than .538". It's called the 17 AUG, and it's .584" tall:

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=..._Target_Front_Sight_Model_17_AUG__584__Height

However, it doesn't specifically say that the 17 AUG has a 3/8" dovetail. Can I reasonable assume that it does? Furthermore, will the WGRS rear on the short action 11G zero correctly with the .584 Lyman 17 front? Any issues with a synthetic front ramp?

Sorry for all the questions, but I think it would be worth it to have a .223 rifle with a good sight setup for range fun and practice. Help is appreciated, although I doubt many have tried this particular setup.
