What a FFL dealer told me about the buying tendencies of older shooters...

I'm 66, age doesn't affect what I shoot but it sure does affect how I shoot. 40+ years ago I hated a "flyer" outside the 3" bull on a target 50 ft away. Now I put a sheet of copy paper 7 yds out, paste a 1" orange dot in the middle and I'm happy if I have as many holes in the paper as rounds fired. "Clusters" are a bonus. Joe

Hmmm. Interesting replies,

I'm another 49er.
Since coming over on the boat in 52 from Germany, we lived in a house without firearms till the 60s when my dad got a Nylon 66 ( I still have).
Since he fought for Germany in WW2 I suppose I had kicked around getting a K98 but never acted on it.
I have a few milsurps, a few revolvers, some black rifles, lever guns, pumpguns and recently started reloading (today)for a gun bash win New Model Blackhawk in .41.
I suppose I'm at a stage where I'm not too interested in more firearms or even specific guns.
If something piques my interest, I may pull the trigger.

I did apply for a Wyoming cow tag a few weeks ago and am working a load for a Savage 111 in .300 (also gun bash win).
At this point, I don't and have never sold a gun.
My kiddos only want the Redhawk and S&W66 so the SKS's. AK, AR's, PA10 and everything else will eventually find new homes.

4 22 single actions and 2 357, 1 44s, 1 44m, 1 45 conv, plus six b.p. sas.. levers, 1 357, 2 44, 1 444, 1 45-70, and 2 30-30. Every one but one blue and wood. One ss. Shotguns, six side by sides, and a handful of singles.
Plastic stuff, four (all ccw stuff, thin and small). Dad carried a stainless Blackhawk or a Colt nickel saa but he was a deputy sheriff and could wear it on his duty belt

Love to meet that man and set on the porch of his cabin and share a jug. Sounds like my kind of people.

Sage advice about parting with at least some of those first purchases. Like a first love, you'll find yourself daydreaming about them someday.

I mostly shoot my .22's, have a couple of semis and a revolver in short guns and a couple of long guns too. I wish I could shoot my black powder more often but the only outdoor range around leaves something to be desired.

Is that Markham Park?

I'm a late B(l)oomer. Shows I grew up on was The Rat Patrol, Combat, Adam 12 etc. Always wanted to be in the military and a cop, gosh, it looked so manly and fun. I did have fun but after a few years it was tedious, boring, monotonous, sprinkled with sometimes interesting and occasionally the odd adrenaline rush. By the time I was old enough to get paid to plant a flag on some new Iwo Jima, America entered a very peaceful period, and toting a Thompson like Vic Morrow gave way to the M16 and M16A1, god I hated that cheap plastic forestock that was two half ellipticals and later the spiney round forestock that was just plain uncomfortable without gloves. I threw a few training grenades, could take apart 5 different weapons, graduated and was sent overseas to motor pool duty. The most excitement we had was pulling guard duty at night when a guy copped a squat on top of a porcupine. When I became a cop, I was lucky to sign out a M38 but not for long and being forced to carry a nine, I chose a SA/SA BHP. Closest thing I could carry that reminded me of a 1911.
Arthritis now determines many decisions, including no longer being strong enough to enjoy a Springfield M1 or even a Bushmaster Patrol Carbine. My eyesight also has changed and the grooved fixed rear notched sights with the slim front blade means I usually miss the entire target.
Funny (not ha ha) but now I'm appreciative of Glocks and lasers, Shotguns are my main battery after I rid myself of Enfields and other too heavy WW1/2 Battle Rifles.
I still visit the gun shop and always make sure to at least buy a box of unneeded ammo, I like to browse but for the most part, gun design has become a bit ridiculous, a lot to do with Tactical stuff. Last time I was there, two fellas were contemplating going 300 Win Mag or 338 Lapua and I can't remember if they were out to shoot Elk, gongs or what but then they started discussing the 6.5 Creedmore and I had enough, but they were in their late 20s so what the heck, their generation is going to have to defend this country from the enemies from within, apparently we were asleep at the wheel. I did mention that the scope should be of a good quality and they should be prepared to fork over a goodly sum for which they didn't take into account.
I actually crave an M1 Carbine, had one issued to me (always asked the armored if there were older weapons to check out instead of the M16 and they were always surprised) and it fired fine, now I'm reading everywhere that it's just a piece of junk that's worthless but I know better, my dad carried one in Korea (being an FAO), he needed something light that wouldn't weigh him down once the incoming artillery realized where he might be. I did a stint with the UN as a Liaison NCO, Jerusalem, Golan Heights (both sides), Lebanon, Sinai Desert, that was interesting. Weapons were everything from Uzi's to FN FAL's. The Fijian army dominated and I was impressed that their NCO's were very British like. It could take 10-15 years just to make Corporal, Sergeants were gods. The loose bolt of the M1 was very good in this sandy region and there was a reason that the AK, Galil and Uzi dominated the arena, they were designed to work dirty.
Idk, give me a 1911 and an M1 carbine and I could be very happy.

I'm 57 and in addition to having more resources internet based gun sales casts so much wider net than any gun show I ever attended at any age. The flip side of that is the odds of finding something especially "niche" for sale at a lower than expected posted price, as well as the engagement of haggling vs auctions.

My first hunting rifle was a milsurp Italian 6.5X52mm carbine. I used from age 13 until I sold it in my mid-20's frustrated with trying to find loaded ammo for it. I have no great desire to purchase another.

I don't own any firearms manufactured my birth year, nor am I seeking any.

My purchases recently have been more oriented toward practical use vs the m8lsurp orientation I had in my younger years,. Having said that very few of my purchases incorporate polymers through the present day and I doubt that will change.

I’m 52. My tastes have gone full circle a few times; starting with lever guns and revolvers.. to AR’s and Glocks, WWII guns.. to bolt rifles and semi shotguns.. to pump shotguns and rimfires, then round again... My collection of stuff doesn’t fit any set genre, but covers most.

My last few purchases have been a Win model 70 7-mag, a Browning BPS 16 gauge and three Smith revolvers.

On the want list, one of the “Tanker” M1A rifles is really growing on me...

Stay safe.

I'd say that fella's observations were spot on! I'm edgin up on 70... all
my handguns are revolvers .357's and .22WMR's. Don't own any auto's. I'm a big fan of lever action rifles. Own one bolt action rifle in .22WMR and a vintage 10/22 that I bought new in the late 60's.

Went deer hunting last season with a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. with peep sights.

Bought a new lever rifle last year... a . 357 Marlin 1894... I just love lever actions.

I guess I have always been interested in guns, going back to when I was a kid and having a copy of "Guns and Ammo" strategically placed in my textbook at school! Nowadays you definitely can't do that any more! My Dad fought in Europe during WWII and was no longer interested in guns after he got back home. My Mom didn't want any guns in the house (more like one of the "you'll shoot your eye out kid" crowd). Don't really fault her for that as my brothers and I could get kind of rowdy at times!

When I went to work after high school I met co-workers who were into shooting and hunting so I quickly fit in there! The family of one of my friends at work owned some property out in the country so we would go out there every chance we got to do some plinking, hunting, and fishing. His Dad was a patrolman on a big city police force and he was always bringing home old rifles and shotguns that he picked up from some of the pawn shops he use to frequent. My favorites were an old Remington pump action .22 and an equally well used Ithaca Model 37 pump action 20 gauge.

Finally when I was old enough I began to buy my own guns, a few handguns (mostly revolvers), a Remington Model 870, and a Ruger Model 10/22. Later I added a Colt AR15 as the price back then was too good to pass up on and I had always wanted one! Gradually over the years I drifted away from revolvers and got much more into semi-autos, mostly 1911s and Browning Hi-Powers, with the occasional Ruger, Beretta, and Walther for good measure. Only recently I have gone back to my revolver roots and added black powder wheelguns to the mix.

To paraphrase Dennis, "I'm 56, I'm not old...." I've not gone on the search for guns made in the year of my birth, though for a few years I had use of my Dad's first 1100 after he got an 1100 Magnum. That 1100 was built in '63, which was the first year for them. And I have oft stated that I'd love to have my issue M16A1, or at least the lower off it, for it was made in 1964 and by H&R, making it near as old as I, and a rare variation. But alas, I both dream and digress.
Now it's more about quality than quantity with guns for me. I did finally go back to an 1100 after years of 870's, but one specifically for clays, though I've shot pheasants with it. I am buying a Ljutic Monogun, after 40 years of wanting one. Then probably a 9mm wundercompact of some sort, though my .45's still suffice. As finances permit, there is a list. I have been regaling my sons with some of my guns that they have wanted over the years.

I am an accumulator more than anything. I end up with whatever good deals or bargans I find. In my mid 60's and from a MAC 10 to a .22 raven to a 500 NE to several cap and ball firearms and everything in between. And I do mean just about everything! Strangly I do not own a Glock, for they do not fit or feel rite in my hand for some reason and I find several better choices out there that fit me better. YMMV

I still have the Colts and Winchesters of my youth, still have a SXS but I’m only interested in buying plastic guns I carry now.

The past is still there if I choose to venture back through my gunning diary.

Birth year gun? Yeah maybe a S&W revolver circa 1959 in a .45 caliber. Only other revolver I have any “feelings” for would be a 4” nickel plated Diamondback.

I still own my first guns Ruger .22 standard, Marlin mod 60, Remington sportman 48, NEF 20g these where mine not the farm guns we used daily. Now I just need a nice Glass case to display them. They aren't worth much but they are irreplaceable to me, as a 49er.

I’m 62 and have a bit of everything from blackpowder to black guns. Only one that I’ve never really liked is a Tokerov TT 33 I have. That commie gun just doesn’t fit these capitalist hands of mine well.

It depends what you grew up coveting. My latest projects, now I I've a bit of money to toss into guns I truly do not need, are a Galil (Golani sporter, but dressed well) and a SIG 551 (a 556, but increasingly festooned with Swiss bits, and soon to be painted all gray). Those are what I coveted when I was a teenager.

I still have all the guns I bought in my younger days so I don’t have to go and buy them back. Now at 65 what I’m buying now are things to use to teach the grandkids! I still pick up on a favorite to add to the stable but it’s getting few and far between.
