Hi guys,

I just found this Springfield offered on a German firearms dealer's web site for 449,- €. Do you know this model? I tried to look it up it on the Springfield Armory homepage but couldn't find it. Has this gun been discontinued?

Well, I was just wondering... I'm due to get my firearms license in March 04 and I can't wait to go shopping :)

Hrmm... I used to have what was called a 'Lightly Loaded' that was pretty similar but it was parkerized, had a flared exection port and had a longer trigger... Everything else looks pretty much like that one including the sights, MSH and funky for a 5" gun grip safety.

The grip safety was nothing more than the original safety for a spur hammer that has been relieved to work with a Commander hammer. Many people do this themselves to switch to a Commander hammer without having to purchase a new grip safety.
Being that this is on a German site it maybe a leftover from a previous run of Springfields (notice the ejection port is not flared and the postion of the emblem stamped into the slide).

Um... why is there a difference between grip safeties for those two hammer types?

I'd also think it's some sort of old model that has been discontinued.

It sounds like a good offer... a bit too good. 1911s are pricey over here, even basic Milspecs run at 700 - 800 € new. I really wonder why this one is offered for that much less... have you ever heard of Springfield production runs that turned out complete lemons?

Cratz2, how did you like the gun you mentioned?

Regards,

Trooper

If you don't cut a dimple in the original grip safety the round burr hammer will hit the safety and not go to full cock. Which in turn means the slide can't fully retract. The spur hammer for which it was designed for will simply lay back over the safety. Much like you can't use an upswept beavertail grip safety with a spur hammer for the very same reason (clearance) unless you bob the hammer spur.
